Yes you are.
Do i need my tin foil hat?
Becoming a sentient robot is a bit more complex than covering yourself in metal, we might notice wink

So, in other words, you don't know either.

These robots are brilliant, but they have been around for a long time now and after, i assume, millions of $ spent, nothing has ever come of these developments.

Yes. Robots out to practical use just like those Boston dynamics ones.

Surely cannot be serious. You think these research companies only exist to produce youtube videos?? Or do you think robotic research is solely aiming to develop you a sexual partner or something?

It would be nice if they did, however, could you show me where this development is now being used?

Genuine interest.

That guy is Clifford Still. He wrote a great book about a tracking a hacker in the early days of networks.

If you've got 18 minutes - this is how you spend it with an agile mind. Cliff Stoll at his best.

Why do you think it isn't being used anywhere?

that rover 100 was based on a considerably older design than 1997!! It barely changed from the 1980 when it was launched.

A lot of this sort of stuff is based on what gets spun out of it, much like space travel, it contributes to technology in other ways. Normally when Google or the other big guys buy a company there is a large game in play. Much like how Google Photos contribute to the self-driving car project, there is normally a multi-billion dollar industry that's in play. Often it's not obvious to those on the outside.

it's not like they can make a research mule rough-looking quadroped one day and then the next day everyone owns their own lifelike robot dog that never needs feeding. Success in that industry isn't something along the lines of every member of the public owning a servant robot to do their bidding and suck them off at will... they are developing for military, manufacturing etc application. You're not going to just see them bleeping and blooping down the high street for some sausages. It isn't hugely visible to the man on the street. AI is permeating lots of things though, but not necessarily in formats that include arms and legs.
