Mythbusters done this using a range of guns, showing that in "The Films" you can escape by jumping into the water. If I remember rightly a 50calibre round stopped after a short distance, a metre or so.
Still wouldn't like to try it myself.

Yes I remember That was going from air resistance to to water resistance.

It's been thought on many a gun board that if the barrel was full of water so equal pressure the bullet would go quite a bit further.(Don't shoot the messenger) Obviously not.
