A nice watch and a nice collection of single malts (or Gins, or Dark Rums or whatevertakesyerfancy).

Clothes for working around the garden/garage.

Emergency torches.

Cooking? Nope
Tweed jacket!! Sooner be seen dead
Ink Pen?? What??

For all of that I think the sense of contentment is the main barometer, if you have that one then everything else is details.

1. A good mechanical watch (Rolex Sub) to pass to son
2. Several pairs of handmade shoes
3. A DE razor, shaving soap and badger brush
4. A good quality fountain pen (Parker 51)
5. A shotgun
6. A plain dark suit for each day of the week
7. At least 21 plain white shirts, double cuffed and with no button down
8. A large and unfeasibly rapid estate car
9. A top end hi fi with a turntable
10. Humidor
11. Extensive collection of malt whisky

Yes there came a point at about 35 when it made sense for me to buy not just a tie, but clothing for sombre occasions. Used 3 - 4 times a year since then. Useful saving. Used last week when we buried a friend who was 41. The cancer took him swiftly.
