One of the most annoying aspects for me is the Remain campaign's tactic of 'without the EU we wouldn't have ........' along the lines of 'What have the Romans ever done for us?' a la Monty Python.

Some of it may be true, but you have no way of knowing what would have happened if we hadn't been in the EU, and some of it could well have happened sooner, better or both.

They seem to be suggesting that the UK, as an independent nation/people, would not have had the wherewithal to, for example, update our employment laws, or clean up our beaches, which I, for one, find quite insulting.

My last clause was an additional annoyance, not an instruction.

Next door have one of those sensor ornaments that makes a noise when someone approaches.

Trouble is the damn thing has malfunctioned and has been cock-crowing non stop now for over an hour.

Windows 10 - the offer to upgrade.

Your choices:

- Upgrade Now
- Schedule upgrade later
- Do not schedule

So you select 'Do not schedule', and the bloody thing keeps coming back.

Any use of the word 'patriotic' and the leave side saying we can negotiate our own trade agreements like its some sort of good thing, believing we have anything like the clout we'd have inside the EU.

Edit - typo on a fairly key point!

And the remain side saying that we need the EU clout in order to benefit from international trade, as if we were a net exporter (like that's ever going to happen).

Personally I am happy to take the FTs word that it will be a pain in the backside!

Just to use one example - China. I am fromt he West Midlands and one of our biggest employers is JLR. JLR depend on trade to China, pretty significantly.

We get to negotiate our own deal with China. Hooray....anyone who thinks that we would be able to negotiate with China with ANYTHING like the clout of the EU on the issue is a bit naive and living in the fifties to be honest (people do not defer to us because we are Great Britain any more!).

So if there is a price hike due to levys and taxes etc - why on earth would they forsake a BMW or Audi for a now suddenly more expensive Jag or range Rover. They probably wouldn't is the answer.

Another 'pro' argument I have seen was something to do with getting away from EU agriculture policy - well the NFU are mortified because the industry is propped up by the subsidies.

Anyway - I will leave it there as there are other threads for this stuff

Sorry, I can't leave that unanswered- Price rise due to levies and taxes? Do you know who would benefit the most if China and the UK did that to each other? Us of course, because we are a net importer. So although JLR might suffer a bit the UK as a whole would benefit. But the trade war isn't going to happen for exactly that reason so we are talking about pie in the sky anyway.

I agree anything further should go on an appropriate thread.

The Guardian.

Or specifically, the campaign they are pushing to 'police the interweb' dressed up as a defence of women's rights (because female* Guardian writers receive more online trolling).

  • other - and none - gender types are available, once someone has invented them.
Why is it the supposedly libertarian Guardian types cannot see the (obvious) downsides to internet censorship? Does their control freakery so easily outweigh freedom?

Luckily their comment section doesn't hold back - they get a good shoe'ing.

Doesn't mean it won't happen though.

^^^ added to that the total intolerance Liberal Guardian types have for any views that don't accord with their own very narrow view of what the social consensus is. Anyone they disagree with is liable to trial by twitter mob.
