The latest corsa ad with the apple in car system. It is supposed to help you drive and use your phone safely. Yet it then shows the car crossing the centre line and having to swerve back. Really safe.
This is one reason why people are such st drivers these days - cars are marketed as smartphones on wheels and no one is encouraged to drive them properly.

Soft close loo seats.

Designed by women?

Just back from hols - both loos in the rental house fitted with these evil sodding devices. They will not stay open! Leads to ungainly stance as the effing seat repeatedly tries to close whilst I'm busy...

I will never allow these disasters of modern life to be fitted anywhere I pay rates. End of.

The Olympics person on Radio 4 this morning. Since when did "medal" become a verb? She was describing participants who were going to "medal". If you used correct grammar, people would take you far more seriously. Unless she meant they were going to meddle in someone else's affairs.

This has already had a mention somewhere on PH,and apparently to medal IS a verb.

No it's not. And just because some trendy dictionary on the interweb says it is doesn't make it so. Language takes longer than 8 years and 2 Olympic games to evolve.

I had no idea the OED was trendy. Particularly that it was trendy on the "interweb" [Clarkson, J, circa 2010] in the 1960s.

The OED simply reflects words in common usage. It doesn't decide whether they are acceptable revisions to the English language, as the Académie française does for the French language in France, for example.

Firstly the internet should never quoted as a source for anything and secondly you're referencing is appalling.

I'm sure it's come up multiple times over 147 pages, but it's pissed me off again this morning.

My bloody wife clearly steers into the kerb to see if she's parked close enough to it, shaving metal from the rim of the wheel every time she parks!!

Each time I mention it I got a nod of the head and agreement that she'll stop doing it, but I know it goes in one ear and out the other because it just doesn't register on her list of things she should care about.

If it was her car I wouldn't be too bothered, if she wants to drive round in something with shagged wheels who am I to care. But no, her car blew up at the weekend so now she's wrecking OUR family wagon!

Off the top of my head although will probably be on the list somewhere before:

  • Cars with hazard lights on thinking that enables them to park anywhere
  • People that queue overnight to be the first for the latest gadget
  • Groups of people walking down a path not allowing any room for other people to pass in the opposite direction
  • people using their tablets as cameras
  • Airport security
  • Computer says "no" people and not being able to use their initiative
  • Cold callers
  • Smokers throwing their butts out the car window/on the floor
  • taxi drivers who don't know where they are going
  • Moped riders who don't know how to ride correctly.
  • People stating "this is the best/worst" when it is only their opinion, not a fact.
Rant over :-)

The English language doesn't have an equivalent of the Académie française though and so there is no actual 'official' version of the English Language.

If a word (or new definition for an existing word) enters common usage then, in effect, it becomes 'official' by default.
