Apropos of nothing, but the phrase "making progress" has been in use by The Institute of Advanced Motorists for decades (40+ years at a minimum I would estimate) and few would call the IAM "cool".

Shhhhhh... don't let facts get in the way of a cliché man moan. wink
I get it. For years I didn't know about them. They are plain white doors with a window in.

Heres a map. Although it doesn't show that you can go through the restaurant area to "Cooking and eating" biggrin

Not always. Often they are just archways with a handy sign above them saying "shortcut to..." smile

So laid back they still recommend driving techniques conceived in the fifties.

I was conceived in the fifties so maybe that's why I drive so 'carefully'.

There were approx 4 million cars on the road in the fifties, and there are approx 32 million now. Do you think the all rules you learnt back then are still appropriate in an environment that's 8 times busier, with different cultural and social norms? Mind you I'm sure there wasn't much red light jumping, tailgating or road rage back then. smile

Cambridge City Council, who now say that I should put shredded paper in an old envelope and put it in the blue bin, whereas previously it could go loose in the green bin.

Do they seriously want people to open their shredding bins, pick out a handful of paper, shove it into an old envelope (most of the ones that come through my door are C6 size, which will hold fk all in terms of shredded paper), repeat however many times, then carry all the envelopes and put them in the blue bin? I must visit the council's home planet some time - it seems nice there.

...
Waveney District Council. Not only for now charging us for the green bin separately (£42 for annual garden waste charge - I call it a sneaky back door council tax rise). But shredded paper used to go in the blue bin but now should be placed in the compost.

Under Hart District Council we have just the Black bin and the Blue bin (thank gods) and they say to put shredded paper in your waste bin (ie. the Black bin) as it cannot be recycled.

Looking on their website, it seems that if you want a Green bin you have to pay £30 to get one, and also pay an annual service charge of £45 for collection.

Works the same way round here. We used to have 3 bins (Black for Landfill, Blue for recycling and Green for garden and kitchen waste). Last year they scrapped the Green bin as it was and now you have to pay about £50 a year for the Green bin and can only put in Garden waste. You are not allowed to put any kitchen waste in there at all, not even potato/carrot peelings. Pisses me right off as with a veggie in the house we produce quite a lot of peelings and scrap veggie stuff that now has to go into the Black bin as we have nowhere to site a composer that will actually work and produce anything other than a green sludge. Even more annoying is that I have to put the Black bin out once per month now whereas before it was once every two months.

Employing a composer to do your recycling does seem unnecessarily decadent... smile

I'm going to put that on my Liszt.

I have to say we have the same problem with the charged garden waste bin around here, although we now have a little worm tower thingy where they turn some of our peelings into some good gear for the plants.

(Still have to do a bit of Chopin to prepare stuff for them though...)
