Do they just shout random profanity or is it an insight into what they are thinking?

Neither.

I must say that I think that this is a piss poor thread.

Since when is it acceptable to ridicule a mental illness?

It's a neuropsychiatric disorder. (which most would class as being within the wide spectrum of mental illness)

And it's a myth that Tourettes involves constant swearing. There are many degrees of Tourettes, from mild ticks and noises to swearing and spitting.

Tim Howard, Everton goalie is a tourettes sufferer, but most people would never know.

Thanks for the insight. Those ones on the telly are always shouting "slut" and "we" and "you're a fking ". I was just wondering if those swearing Tourettes sufferers are actually thinking this or is it just any old swear word.

Having seen the Michel Roux program on TV recently, which had two sufferers on it who were unemployable I think this could be a very long, sad, humourless and awkward thread. confused

Presumably there are plenty of careers or even roles within careers where the (far end of the scale) sufferer could be employed without having to face customers or communicate with them verbally?

My understanding is that it's an uncontrollable compulsion to verbalise thoughts that pop into your head, but I'm not an expert. There was a documentary about a young Scottish lad who was an extreme sufferer on tv many years ago, and it was desperately sad. Not funny at all.

So it is a bit like being on here then, except we type it rather than verbalise it...

After watching that program you realised there is so much more to it than just uncontrolled swearing, amongst other things they had 'meltdowns' where they were hit so hard they lay twitching on the floor for sometime whilst someone watched over them.

If you think about what you have put there, you are suggesting that they should be given careers that just suit their Tourettes condition, what about what they can actually do or want to do? I wouldn't want to do a job I wasn't suited to.

I wonder what their life expectancy is? You don't seem to see older people with it, I wonder if they get so fed up they just jump in front of a train or something....

Probably best we don't discuss anything for fear of offending someone or other.

I have another theory. Maybe at some point in their life, they make the mistake of calling Ronnie Pickering a c****
