Not sure on this one, how do you detach a rather large and powerful dog from a persons arm ?

I've got a 2 foot breaker bar in the car, I'm sure that could kill the dog quick enough.

That's horrific.

Unbelievable that it took them so long to restrain the animal. What an utterly evil thing it must have been.

Before I looked at the photos of the area where the attack took place, I already had an image in my mind. It wasn't far wrong.

Kick it as hard as I possibly could then try and beat it to death before I got bitten too much.

Back to the subject of the thread though, I suppose a bloody big knife to its chest would be a good plan.

Assuming something suitable was to hand.

I can't imagine what you could do with bare hands alone.

I read a discussion about dog attacks on another forum a while ago. It was suggested that the two most effective things to do are to pour liquid into the dog's eyes, or poke your finger up it's bum.

Are you sure it's not "poke your fingers in its eyes, and pour liquid up its bum"? You could look very foolish if you got them mixed up, best to be sure.

Approach the dog from behind and bum it senseless grab a front paw in each hand and pull them apart as hard as possible. Easy to say from the comfort of my sofa but much harder to do in practice when the adrenaline is pumping.

I think the second poster had it about right, 2ft breaker bar on the dogs head/snout, adrenaline would be your friend in that situation.

Agreed, can't imagine there was a lack of knives in one of the houses. No animal's going to survive a stab wound from a large knife. I hope I never find myself a situation where I have to make that call.

Reading the article it was her son's dog so it must've known her too.

Doesn't the article say the guy broke several golf clubs smashing them off the dog? That's quite an impressive beating.

If the dog is wearing a collar and you want it to live your best option is to grab the collar on the top of its neck between the ears with a full fist grip and twist 90 degrees. Collar will tighten and dog will black out within 10-15 seconds. Once its down on the floor count to 5 slowly and then let go and run! It will take 3-5 seconds for the dog to get back up so make sure you know where you are going to run too.. if there is no where you wait with the twist on until help comes..

But back in the real world there are some problems...

Any dog which is really strong may well ride up and try and resist the twist with a roll. If this happens you are probably going to get bitten. Badly.

Another risk is it may try and slip the collar as soon as you grab it. Also as you will be straddling the dog it will probably go for the groin. Again really bad.

Some collars may snap.. old ones. I have had this happen to me once - I had to grab a dog - took hold of the collar and put all me weight back to control it and the collar snapped and I winded myself with my own elbow! Also some collars wont twist easily or are too slack.

So its not 100%.

Unless you are confident you can do anything practical with a knife or hammer etc (large dogs are faster and stronger than most humans) then my advice is to get a fire extinguisher (co2 is best) and spray directly in its face but from a distance of 3-5m. The problem is who carries this... not many people.

On the plus side I have never known the fire extinguisher method fail.

Dogs like Pit Bull or Presa etc are basically 50kg pure muscle and 10 x stronger than most humans when in prey drive. Their bones, skulls etc are very tough. If you are going to stab a big dog you need to use a thick knife as anything thin is likely to hit bone and snap..

Who r u jihadi john? Good luck with that! Stab yeah but no chance cutting his head off.

Ive got a lab, admittedly one of the largest labs ive encountered but he is very powerful, no chance he let you cut his head off.

A pit bull yeah right!

Bad story anyway...............

I "think" they meant the golf clubs were used to attempt to pry the jaws apart. I may be wrong or course, but I struggle to understand how such an animal would survive being beaten repeatedly with such a severity that the shafts of the clubs broke. Obviously though, this is outside of my area of expertise of both sporting goods and veterinary skills.

My thought was to nip to the Logstore in the garden and get the completely sharp and evil Axe, one swing and it would be a mostly headless hound, without that to hnd I think it would be a case of using bodyweight down onto an elbow on its neck but it is amazing how strong dogs like that are, I remember a medium sized terrier attaching itself to my mums little Chihuahua, my dad struggled to remove it and he battered fk out of it, never mind a Pitbull, why the fk does someone have something like that in a little house anyway ?
