I went to see Bryan Adams in concert last night.

Fan-bloody-tastic. The man knows how to rock. Go see him if you can.

By way of background this was the first leg of my "deadpool" tour. As I missed out on seeing Michael Jackson or Prince live (I did catch Bowie though), I thought I'd better start ticking off some of the legends. First thing to say is that you have plenty of time with Bryan. He sang his song "18 Til I Die" and, man, you believed him (he even riffed on the fact that the line "Someday I'll be 18 going on 55" pointing out he is now 56 (the song was written 20 years ago). The man looked as fit, sinewy and lean as a racehorse. He banged out a 2 hour set and looked ready for more. Elton John is next on the list - I have a bit more concern for him.

Bryan has the type of back catalogue that artists would kill for - pretty much every song rocked the room. It was a huge karaoke session, as the audience were all singing along. Amazingly, even the words that fill every concert-goer's heart with dread ("here's a song from my latest album") didn't really dampen the mood. The new songs, well, they are like the old songs. He has a formula, it works, he sticks to it. It got the audience on their feet and dancing.

His gravelly voice was rock steady too. It always sounds as though he is at the limit and I wondered how it would hold up. The answer is: just fine. Better than fine.

The band was on point too. The music was studio-clean and right where you'd expect it - close enough to the studio version to be crowd-pleasing with enough extemporising to know you are getting it live. They are all getting on, though.

Great night.
Desert Trip, California, October.

Roger Waters
Neil Young
The Who
Bob Dylan
Paul McCartney
The Stones

That is a line up.

It's Fabio the Fiat again.

I stayed almost to the end.

Final race for GT cup was a bit crap, one bloke with a new Bentley up against a bunch of people with no chance of competing on a level playing field.

Rest of the day was great.....thumbup

Wow yikes To turn the discourse another way, the best gig I ever went to was probably The Sisters Of Mercy playing a fan club only set at Leeds Poly student bar in Feb 1991 (a friend was in the fan club) where the bass (I was standing at the back) actually reverberated through my body music

Wow eek Just....wow. How is it even possible to have never been to a gig? confused It's like never having eaten ice cream, or never seen the colour red or never having had sex (with another person). One of life's essential experiences has slipped away from your palette cry Makes me sad frown See? Sad face

...or maybe that's just the thought of the endless hours the Sisters of Mercy have stolen from my life hehe Eldritch? I was listening to them when he was plain ol' Andy Taylor rofl

Agreed. Not sure I can persuade the wife to go. Not even sure I am a "festival person"

I've already seen Dylan, The Who and the Stones. I'd love to see Floyd and Roger would be close enough. No real interest in Neil Young or McCartney but wouldn't miss them if I were there.

Yeah, eldritch has sadly become the kinda Raaawwwwwk juggernaut he would have once derided so vehemently. I think once he lost his sense of the absurdity of it all it started going rather wrong.

...personally I never forgave him for that bloody singalongaAndy nonsense of Hey now hey now now hey now hey nonny nonny sing this contraption to me sing! hey nonny...(repeat until death seems a release)banghead

mind you, McCartney... living proof there is no God. Or are we supposed to reconcile a Cosmic Justice that claims Lennon, claims Harrison yet gets to McCartney and thinks "nahhh, fk it. Planet Earth deserves him. let him live."

At least Ringo is hugely amusing as he descends ever further into blithering madness. Peace and lurv, peace and lurve.

And Thomas the Tank Engine laugh

Greek bloke monopolises TT while Iva goes off to be sad hehe

The most annoying thing about Neil Young is that he destroys the theory that Canada has been responsible for the worst crimes against music and never contributed anything good... Alanis Morrissette, Celine Dion, Nickelback, Bryan Adams etc etc... all execrable. Then Neil Young and Leonard Cohen stroll by and blow that argument right out of the water frown

My music tastes are pretty eclectic - ranging from Albinoni to ZZ Top (some people might say "undiscerning" rather than "eclectic". However, Neil Young has never really figured. Not sure why. I remember my uncle playing it extensively, along with Dylan. I "got' Dylan but never developed an affection for Young for some reason. Maybe I need to dig into his back catalogue.

Did you want your theme developed? I should have asked first.
