The weather at "The magic weekend" as it seems to be known as isn't as magic as last year.

HOT is an understatement for last year.

This year wet but sunny now.

Well, i survived (barely)

As it turns out, its not the kids that drive me up the fking wall, but i also had the ex over today, and she just drives me insane, one day in the same space is already waaaaay too much for me.

So now its relaxing for a few hours, and then a new work week... yay

Learnt some interesting things yesterday and today, I knew my great grandfather had served in ww1 in the K.O.Y.L.I, but yesterday my brother posted a picture of his medals on fb and in the chat since then I have found out his service number. As far as I can tell he was in the 12th battalion which were a miners battalion and it looks like he may well have been at a place called Serre at the north end of the Somme battlefield.
Despite many First War Army service records being lost in the Second War - ironically - in a fire during the Blitz, many survive and are in the National Archives in Kew. His number should be engraved on the edge of his medals. Once you have anything Kew have on him, contact his Regiment with what you've found and they will almost undoubtedly be able to help.

After several amalgamations, the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry as was are now part of The Rifles.
His number is 12/1774, we assume that the 12 is the 12th battalion which were set up in 1914 as a pioneer battalion and were composed of miners if he was in this battalion they went to egypt, then sailed back to france on the llandovery castle (famously sunk by the a u boat later in the war), On the first day of the Somme the 12th were used to dig 5 saps heading towards the fortified village of Serre, which the accrington pals and the city of sheffield battalion used to attack the germans, losing approx 80% of their men in the attack

I have found his medal card online which was nice but i havent been able to find anything else as yet.
