I know quite a few people with car collections potentially worth millions that wouldn't spend £50 on a watch (to stay with the theme), or for that matter they will watch a 30 year old TV, because cars mean more to them, and every spare penny is put towards cars (after household bills etc. of course).
Why oh why do people feel the need to trot this trite old ste out all the time Straight to the top of the list of things I don't like about the forums.

No it doesn't.
This isn't an argument, it's just contradiction.
Yes it is.

Yes, word for word and to emphasis what I said it literally makes no sense.
Maybe you like expensive watches.
I don't.
No offence to watch lovers (really), but I see no point to a £5k watch at all. In fact I find most of them gaudy and ostentatious. And frankly that is being generous, but all IMO.
But each to their own. I reiterate; Really; to each their own.

PH is ostensibly about cars/motoring generally. (Not watches, shoes, houses; add anything to this list that will cause offence and be offended if you so choose)
There really is a connection here.

1. You're just making this up.

2. You're being a reverse snob which is as bad as being a snob.

3.

A lot of highly presumptive replies from people that know nothing at all about me.

Too bad, most of you usually make sense.

It's not presumptive - you've just aired clearly your point of view.

You've just made in utter fool of yourself so rather than have the arrogance to blame a lack of understanding perhaps have the humility to recognise your view lacks sense.

Military threads.

I have no experience of being in the military, but do find some of the history related to it quite interesting. The thread about the new carriers we're having built started off quite interesting.

But they always, without fail, descend into some kind of would Rocky beat Tyson kind of argument.

I tend to read (some) of these threads, and rarely if ever post. I have no opinion, it's all for interest. Couldn't we just talk about the engineering that goes into these things, or the politics of the time and how they influenced policy decisions, rather than trying to work out whether 20 duck sized horses could beat 1 horse sized duck?

I am bored with you now

Apology on one point; you were not being presumptive. Others were.

Posters then add weight to their argument by telling everyone about their (past) military credentials or better still hinting at them with use of lingo and winking smilies.

Also I like watches but the 'wrist shots' are just stomach-churning especially if they have a carefully manicured background including more often than not a bottle of whisky or something else equally pretentious.
Rolex in front of Porsche steering wheel. rofl
I imagine most of the posters on those threads spend most of their evenings in front of the mirror like this.

Sometimes it shouts.

(Although to be fair, Stewart's relationship with Rolex has always been commercial, I don't think spending his own money on flashy trinkets is really his style)

I enjoy PH and it has been invaluable as an information source. Also it does provide a lot of entertainment at times. I am less impressed with the jokey or angry threads about the uncool ,'council',chavs or whatever the term is now,fat people,or the threads when someone asks for advice on a speeding offence and a dozen posters tell him how outrageous the speeding was and how richly the punishment was merited. Hardly what the OP was asking.

Not having a serious interest in watches I only go to that forum occasionally but it seems completely harmless. People collect all sorts of stuff such as stamps and coins. For some reason cars and watches seem to appeal to the same people. Look at the ads in any car mag. Many of them have a watch section now so it seems ok to me to reflect that interest here.

Why is it different to a legal thread where a Lawyer points out that they are in fact a Lawyer with decades of experience, while someone with the opposite view has watched Judge Judy.
