You'll also see a lot of people just as thrilled at an old Poljot watch that someone has grabbed off eBay for a ton, just like people who motor on a budget with an MX5 etc etc. Then, at the other end of the spectrum, watch people will be wowed by the poster who posts about his latest Richard Mille, just as car people will appreciate anyone willing to share photos of their new 918/P1 etc.

I like all watches, personally, apart from fakes which I laugh at, like I would laugh at a Ferrari 355 which is actually an MR2 in drag.
Sums it up quite nicely.

a mate of Mrs 2CV is a teacher and so is her husband. Yes, professional jobs and everything, but i don't imagine that their combined wage is more than say £90k. That, again, is all fine and not to be sniffed at. However they seem to manage to afford very expensive holidays, new cars, luxury clothes and jewellery (he has a couple of expensive watches including a panerai) and they've just bought a very big house which they are doing up. I just don't understand where they get their money from, it is way above their means, and I'm convinced that either they get some kind of weird allowance from their parents, or they are up to their neck in credit. Mrs 2CV won't have it, and maintains that they must just be good with money!

I don't mean to sound like a prick, but why would that bother you unless you're someone that marks their success based on others achievements? Just get over it and enjoy your own lot in life!

i didn't any anywhere that it bothered me. It's just confusing.

Well it isn't just you that sounds like a prick, but anyone that comes out with that same template response in internet forum discussions. If you don't want to discuss then why are you contributing? Why don't we all just get on with our lives, never noticing anything about anyone else, and never talking about it. Wouldn't that be weird.

Not likely that they earn anywhere near £90k if just regular teachers. I was offered to go for my teachers training at University as I do teach programming and a teachers pay is very low. Starting salary is only around £21,000. Headmasters get around £75,000 per year. My wifes Cousin is a teacher as is her husband and they don't even earn £27k per year each and that is with 13 years of teaching behind them. Secondary school level.
Maybe it depends on locations??

What is weird is that you have come here to moan about people you perceive to be living outside their means, yet it also doesn't bother you. Maybe it's just jealousy then? Either way, it doesn't bother me, I'm off for some nice food I hope I don't need to justify to anyone I can afford.

Why are you in this thread? Are you just going to get annoyed with everyone and then flounce out? Where did I moan?

? I Think I was originally in this thread because someone moaned about people ticking watches, and I gave a reasoning as to why they (and I, in the past) have done it. I am not annoyed with you or anyone in the slightest, in fact it appears to me that you clearly are annoyed with your friends and what they're doing.

they're not my friends, I am not annoyed with them in the slightest. I'm not saying it again. I am however annoyed at you for repeatedly and wilfully mis-understanding that I have written in an attempt to... well I'm not sure, but I know we've crossed swords before, eh?

It does sound a bit weird and nosey.

You've noticed their stuff and had a think about what it costs and had a think about their salaries and decided they don't add up. You then have a think about how they are affording it and discussed it with your wife. hehe

oh ffs well what is this thread about then? Why is it OK to comment in this way about people you don't know, or who earn a bit less? Where is the line?

it's fine to slam the poor, but not fine to even comment on the slightly less poor. I get that now.

You miss the point so spectacularly that I can only assume you're taking the piss. Nobody was slamming the poor, people were expressing concern for the idiots that borrow well above their means. This can be done at any income level, the poor just do it in double digit APR as a lifestyle choice.

People at any income level are free to do as they please with the money they make, or even borrow.

It seems to me that those who make unwise decisions ultimately pay for them if they get upside down on the loss repayments for instance.

If the person next door were to suddenly appear in a T shirt from Butlins and jogging pants, and had a Patek strapped to the wrist, would not bother me a bit. I am not going to buy the T shirt or the Patek and the person would be doing me no harm. I have no envy for the many who are vastly wealthier than I am not contempt for those is more modest circumstances.

I disagree. I find that sort of hing interesting. However, why not just ask the question?!

Obviously don't word it in the way of 'I think you're poor and living on the never never. Am I right?' wink
