I drove through the tunnel sat lunch time and returned over the bridge about 5.30 pm, I noticed the signs about paying online before Sunday midnight, well I've only just remembered, so what is the norm with this? do I just wait till I'm contacted ?, how much is it ? What about drivers who don't do internet like my step father, what happens then ?....thanks.

You’ll be sent a Penalty Charge Notice if you don’t pay by midnight on the day after you made your crossing.

The penalty charge is £70 and must be paid within 28 days. It’s reduced to £35 if you pay within 14 days and increased to £105 if you don’t pay.

You also have to pay the crossing charge!

And you can pay by phone - 0300 300 0120 - as well as online.

One of the guys I work with has forgot to pay it 3 times and fined on each occasion.

The first 2 he phoned up and they over turned the fines and aloud him to pay the relevant toll. 3rd time he had to pay fine.

It can take up to six months to arrive as they are issuing so many, I'm surprised the fella didn't give you the option of paying the charge even though it's past the midnight next day limit. They did this with my company after I used it and they failed to pay, they got a penalty charge six months later for my first one but were able to pay at the same time for 3 or four subsequent crossings I'd made, this was last year however so they may have tightened up on it.

Except they wouldn't as most French Autoroutes are Toll roads and no one complains about them. Now if it was a lorry load of imported lamb that might be another story.

I do wish people would stop perpetuating the myth that the French own the Dartford Crossing. To state this shows a lack of understanding of how PPP/PFI works.
The assets still belong to the state which can subsequently sell them off if it wishes to do so. Gordon Brown/Alistair Darling proposed to do just that back in 2009.
http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2009/oct/12/go...

The 2010 General Election put paid to that before it could be implemented. Cameron then also flirted with the idea.
However it was abandoned in favour of increasing the charge instead - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-11586160

The current French Connection is SANEF which was awarded the management contract by the Highways Agency in 2013.

I used the crossing for the first time ever in April, and I forgot to pay.

I was sent the PCN but with an offer to pay the original charge which was £2.50 each way to end the matter.

Was not expecting that at all.

Ring them back on Tues or Weds & you might be able to pay the £2.50 I've done this a few times.

Your step-father's possible infringement is a hypothetical situation, so I should try not to worry about it, if you can.

No it isn't.
The number of people who believe it is though, and the strength of some urban myths, always amazes me.
