Okey, this isn't about firearms licensing, which I already know about.

I want to buy some guns. Maybe a .22 semi-auto and a .223 bolt action.

I also have two young children and the problem with my buy guns plan is that my wife has some strange idea that (a) guns are dangerous and (b) more specifically if I get get some guns, they are somehow just going to kill everybody in the house.

I'm not clear if the wife thinks the gun it going to take itself out of the gunsafe, for the ammo to take itself out of the other safe and for the gun to load itself and kill everybody, or if she thinks that I'm careless and I'll leave either the guns or the ammo or both laying around.

The latter is an odd thing to worry about, because I'm quite particular about guns and young children not mixing, unlike some of my 'Merkin relatives with whom we regularly stay with. On our last trip to the US, my wife was quite happy to stay in my cousins house with a rifle, a shotgun and two handguns left in a bag on the floor of the spare lounge room with the ammo in that same bag (being in the US with a house the size of a typical London suburb, there were two lounge rooms, one of which was little used). There was also another handgun somewhere in the house, but nobody could remember where it was.

The wife is also quite ok about me going out shooting by myself (with other people's guns obv since I can't have any in the house because they will kill everybody) and she also seems happy with my cousins taking their children out shooting and she seems happy with me, my cousins and their children going out shooting.

Any ideas about convincing the wife?

Sounds like your wife's problem is with you not with guns.

We are an American family living in the UK and we do miss owning/having the ability to go to our local firing range. I only owned a 9mm semi auto, rifles and 40 cal Glock 22 semi auto. My Wife hated guns but after letting her fire little .22 calibre guns she ended up wanting to go to the range also. .22 cal is pretty much only a pellet gun anyway (considered a plinker in mid west US). She had over 1,000 rounds of ammo at one stage.
Though when our first child was born, we got rid of all our guns as I would not keep a weapon in the house with kids. I was in the military so know how to store and handle them correctly, but just won't. Kids are too curious.
Now saying all that, near every family I knew of, all had guns and nobody ever died or went on shooting sprees.

Take her shooting on a guest day, give her a .22 semi auto and let her enjoy herself. If you're lucky, then the argument will be about how the safe is not big enough and how she needs one of her own.... I live in hope....

The ex wouldn't let me have dangerous toys, she probably kept me alive and ensured I still have all my limbs. They usually know us better than we know ourselves.

Also, why is it that you want a gun? What is you are planning to shoot with it?

OP, thought about something with a bit more stopping power, phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range perhaps?

No need to keep them at home anyway. Keep them at your club.

And what exactly would you want a semi auto rimfire for? Are we expecting home invasions by armies of un ordinary bunny rabbits?

Err... some of the same things that the other 1.9 million legally held guns in the UK are used to shoot?

It seems a relevant question. Lots of people start off the wrong way round and then don't appreciate the restrictions relating to Section 1.

Constabularies also vary their interpretations of permissible usage so it's probably worth also asking which one the OP currently falls under.

My Mrs was dead set against 'guns in the house' too.

She now has 2 of her own and shoots almost as well as I do, so it can be turned around :-)

My late father was a good shot, Mastershot or something. A club mate of his was an Olympic Medallist. Good hobby, go for it!

I've never fully understood the "my wife says I can't" thing.

A couple of my friends have gone through the 'not allowed' to have motorbike/guns/sportscar/etc debacle. Yet the rest of us seem to manage to make our own decisions on such matters without the other half having to give permission.

I wouldn't dream of instructing my partner to not do something just because I didn't like the idea of it. I would class it as some form of domestic abuse by controlling what hobbies they can and can't have.

What would happen if you just went out and purchased said guns?

I've bought a motorbike when she has been on holiday before.

But the police don't need to come to your house to inspect your bike shed. The police do come to your house to inspect your gun safe. The house is shared, so things that go inside go inside by mutual agreement, whereas bikes (which are ok anyway in my case) are outside the house.

I have shotguns and rifles myself so I now the drill so to speak with regards to a firearms officer coming round etc.

I appreciate that the house is shared, but provided you aren't doing anything that will badly damage the family finances, or something stupidly dangerous, then she can't surely have any problems with whatever you propose as a new hobby?
