Remington 597 .22 semi auto, mine has a fully suppressed barrel so v quiet with subsonics.

For a 223 ? Tikka, Ruger , Browning ?

I sold my Browning 243 last year and bought a Browning BAR 308 semi, unfortunately I have yet to fire it.

OP, thought about something with a bit more stopping power, phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range perhaps?
Just what you see here, buddy.

I've never fully understood the "my wife says I can't" thing.

A couple of my friends have gone through the 'not allowed' to have motorbike/guns/sportscar/etc debacle. Yet the rest of us seem to manage to make our own decisions on such matters without the other half having to give permission.

I wouldn't dream of instructing my partner to not do something just because I didn't like the idea of it. I would class it as some form of domestic abuse by controlling what hobbies they can and can't have.

What would happen if you just went out and purchased said guns?
Because for most of us a relationship is a partnership, not like having a pet.

It's her home, it's where her children live. If she doesn't want guns there then (in a normal relationship) that's a matter for discussion, not 'fk you I'm getting them anyway'.

Not sure what I'll get (subject to Mrs Puff approval of course....). I have quite limited experience with bolt action .223s as overseas I usually shoot the AR-15 platform. I like the look at the .223 versions of "Scout" rifles eg the Ruger Gunsite Scout or the Mossberg MVP scout, but that just the look I like, as I said my experience with bolt action centrefires is pretty low. I like .223s more than .308s as the ammo is cheaper wink

Also, why is it that you want a gun? What is you are planning to shoot with it?
Err... some of the same things that the other 1.9 million legally held guns in the UK are used to shoot?
Depends really, there tend to be 2 types of things people shoot at with rifles in the UK. Vermin and targets. If it's the latter then that shooting is generally going to be done a range through a club and the gun could be stored there an avoid all the OP's wife's worries about having guns and kids in the same house.

Think my father had at least 2 or 3 shotguns, a couple of air rifles, and a semi automatic silenced .22 in the house when I was a kid, and the laws on storage were a lot more relaxed. Kept them in a locked cupboard and the ammo in a different room I think, it's easy enough to take sensible precautions.

^ Targets. I can't shoot .223 or other centre fire at the local home club, so to use the .223 I'd have to go to the home club, get the gun, go to the other affiliated club with a bigger range, go back to the home club, put the gun back there, make sure the home club is actually open when all that happens etc etc. Plus owning guns but having to store them somewhere else just seems a bit weird.

Dunno if this has already been posted but can't you store them at the gun club?

An awful lot of clubs don't have storage as they then become a target for thieves, given that most ranges are fairly remote and unmanned.

If she put guns in her handbag it would be a really happy life!

If you had young kids and your wife announced that she was taking up that hobby where people climb building site cranes, tv towers and stuff, you don't think that's something where you should be able to have some serious input?

God help England becoming the same society as the USA in respect of guns, ownership and the morons who think they need them. At least the rules of Darwinism help.

However I do get a farmer, or landowner needing to keep vermin down.

You can't buy a gun without a license, and part of the licensing application involves a visit from plod, who will ask the OH if they are happy for the applicant to be armed. If they are not convinced they may contact the OH privately later to check. They certainly won't approve an application without confirming every adult in the house is on board.

All that makes absolute sense. It never happened though, other half had no contact at all.

Unless OP lets on that his OH is unhappy, the visiting FEO is unlikely to be any the wiser.

Need to be stealthy

I went from tears and hysterics when I bought an air rifle to several shotguns, syndicate membership, kids beating on the shoot, not eating chicken between September and February and a spaniel in less than 5 years.

Ammo cost has never come into it for me as I only go to a range occasionally to sight them in.
I had a Marlin 336 Scout but didn't really get on with the lever action.
Never considered an AR type as I suspect there would be a lot of piss taking turning up with one (hunting not a range).
