Crumpler look OK, leaning towards something canvas/waxed cotton than leather if that helps with any suggestions.
Most Crumpler bags are fabric. This one is very good, I have the older version that I bought 4yrs ago and it's still as good as new. Lots of colour choices too.

Freitag. I've had mine for over a decade, it's travelled all over the world with me and it barely looks worn. Probably a bit hipster though...
I looked at these in their store in Berlin. I just couldn't justify the price. That doesn't mean that they are not a fine product.

As for hipsters, the 1s in Berlin seem to think that their Freitags should be beaten up and stained so you are probably ok with a clean 1.

Eastpak have great designs and their bags are waterproof and last forever (30 year warranty!). I've had a few, and they also expand which is really good. They can last a long time.

Overpriced just because of the name.

Wenger laptop bag for £25 in Amazon. Simple, well made and cheap.

Timbuk2. Waterproof, pretty much indestructible, and user-configurable. Mine's 15 years old and just beginning to break in. For this reason choose colours carefully because you will looking at them for a long time.

Expensive, but they have something about them. I think you can ones made from old lorry tarps, too, if you'd rather have 'Willi Betz' or something written on it. They're the ones I'd choose. wink

I've had two (first was stolen) and they are great, you can fit a huge amount of stuff in them. That said, part of the waterproof tarp inner on the flap on the latest one has worn out in the middle, where it flexes.

Friends recommend Tom Bihn bags, eg: https://www.tombihn.com/collections/briefcases-and...

Ha! My first one was stolen too. I suppose they are sought after.

Excellent for use as a carry-on when flying. Really really easy to get stuff into and out of them at speed in the airport.

I needed one about a year or so ago but didn't want the usual sports brand rucksacks etc.
Found this on ebay, £15 and the quality is brilliant.
The leather straps and stitching (good stitching is always a sign of good quality) are great.

I bought the Navy one but there's other colours.

Made me laugh that... Because my dad went to work for about 30 years using an ordinary supermarket carrier bag to hold his papers/lunch/wallet etc.. despite him being the owner of high street business that employed over 30 staff.

It was only in the last couple years of his business before he sold it that he finally caved in and bought a smart leather messenger bag, after pressure from my mum to 'look more professional' biggrin

Any reason you want a messenger bag? Carrying them is a pain, esp with a laptop.

Lots of lustrous bushy beard growth to go with the overly skinny trousers on this thread.

Fair question and I must admit I've found myself looking at a few rucksacks and asking the same question.

Biggest PITA I can see with many messengers is there is no handle so you have to use the strap or carry it under your arm - I know that I'm not a messenger so it's me not using it for the intended purpose.

And no beard, no skinny jeans, far from it but god forbid anyone should want anything nice on PH biggrin
