Rothco plain black (I think they also come in navy blue, tan and khaki green) canvas bag; Its fairly heavy duty (good thick canvas) it has worked for me for the past couple of years for carrying my lunch etc. to work. It is not flash, designer, stylish or expensive but it suits my needs perfectly. Ohh and Jack Bauer used one in 24 so it must be good hehe

I got bought a secondhand (I know, pauper) District PM (or very similar) which I originally loved but felt quite quickly that it was the first thing people spotted. Nor did I really own anything else of a similar relative value so it looked like I'd spent my life savings on it. I felt a bit silly so I no longer use it. Just yesterday when parking up at the airport and spotted a young lad with one. First thought was why anyone would buy a bag that was worth more than the car you were getting it out of.

Someone mentioned above, but CK do some quite nice ones for around £100.

Backpacks/small rucksacks, always remind me of groups of foreign exchange students; usually French.

To be fair nothing to do with any "manbag" stuff (though honestly, that River Island thing WFT?! laugh) I just don't want to be walking doubled-over if I ever need to carry anything heavy.

I'm a huge Ralph Lauren fan. They have some lovely bags available. Perfect fit for 15 inch Macbooks etc. Made from Calf skin. Look on their main site. Was recently looking at Gucci bags but they are eye watering prices.

Actually, for a change, nobody was talking about "man bags".
I disagree, a "messenger" bag is a man-bag by another name as far as I am concerned and yes, I have one too wink

I suppose it's a 'generation thing'. Back in my youth we didn't have anything that needed lugging around to warrant a bag - and you'd probably get beaten up for having one.

This was at a time when spaghetti came in tins, a Vesta meal was the height of sophistication, and broccoli hadn't yet been inventedsmile

Timbuk2. Waterproof, pretty much indestructible, and user-configurable. Mine's 15 years old and just beginning to break in. For this reason choose colours carefully because you will looking at them for a long time.
I've had two (first was stolen) and they are great, you can fit a huge amount of stuff in them. That said, part of the waterproof tarp inner on the flap on the latest one has worn out in the middle, where it flexes.

Friends recommend Tom Bihn bags, eg: https://www.tombihn.com/collections/briefcases-and...
+1 on Timbuk2.
I cycle and read everywhere on what bag to get and ended up getting one of these.

- lots of different sizes depending on how much you want to carry
- you can customize the colours/trim/materials if you want
- waterproof
- bloody tough. it should easily last you 10+ years.
- quick and easy to loosen/tighten

the extra strap that comes with the new ones offers more support and lets you strap the bag up tight, which is useful for if you are cycling/walking/running and don't want it flopping about.

I only have 1 'cos lugging a briefcase around the city on the underground is asking for trouble. Might as well wear a flashy watch.

If I'm not going to work I can manage without.

Yep same for me, I actually despised\derided them till about 10 years ago when I started to carry more and more crap to work and realised a plastic carrier bag just wasn't going to cut it any more. I tried carrying a rucksack for a while but as someone else said, it's not ideal when using a packed tube into central London for all the reasons stated already.

So it's then either carry a briefcase and look like a tt or carry a man-bag and look like a metrosexual. I chose the lessor of two evils (I think) smile

Hmmmm. The only acceptable circumstance for carrying a bag like this is that you absolutely have to carry around loads of spare hollow point 45cal ammo, grenades and gratuitous amounts of chewing baccy that will make you a sexual Tyrannosaurus, just like me.

If it's your gluten-free lunch, chap stick, spare trendy glasses & beard oil, you've just got a handbag. biggrin
The sad thing about this is that although your post is tongue in cheek (hopefully!) there will be guys who actually do believe their masculinity will be diminished by carrying such a bag.

The truth is, no-one cares, and those who DO draw such conclusions, well, their opinion isn't worth a damn anyway.

OP didn't ask for opinion on what bags are sexually appropriate, he asked for recommendations on bags.

Subtle, but fairly big difference.

My 20 year old backpack has finally broken a strap so I need a new bag.

Tempted by a messenger type bag and there is a lot of choice from £20 off Amazon through to silly money.

Does anyone have any suggestions on something that is decent quality so should last, and that is vaguely worth the money?

5 pages until that was posted, PistonHeads is slacking smile

Much as I expected some ribbing, it's simple, there's a stload of brands that I've never heard of, that you never see in shops unless you live in somewhere like London, and that you wouldn't know about until you got to page 17 of Google.

One very important lesson that I have learned is to never ever under any circumstances Google "waxed mens bag".

Very personal choice when it comes to a new bag. I spent hours look, evaluating, some as high as £300 (!?!??) and low as £20 of the 'bay (usually rubbish).

Settled on one, but I needed quick access without opening, like my old one (zip on the back outside). No buy!

Then settled on another, until I saw it has buttons that WILL rip, I just know it! No buy!

Lovely leather one, but it wouldn't fit A4 files...!??!?! Crazy. Aliexpress...nop!

Also saw the Will Smith one, lol! No ty!

So anyway I finally settled on one, and ended up receiving a ruck sack!!! Ha, but in the end I ended up with this, £24ish:

Choice of grey, black, cream etc but that looked like the one! Happy with my choice although a co-worker said it was a piece of old .... frown Once I got over that, I'm happy. ^_~ Oh and it has the zip!
