There must be some correlation between the car model or brand and the atmosphere of the forum!
/thread.

That's exactly it, it's all about brands and how people identify with them. If it's a more aspirational brand then you will get more people who are trying to show off and get one up on each other.

It's exactly the same as in here. Compare the atmosphere in the Porsche forum to say one of the TVR forums. The Porsche forum is full of pompous shallow people concerned about branding and image, while TVR forums tend to have people who are helpful and less arrogant. A less aspirational brand will simply have less aspirational posters.

You'll see the same in the watch forum with threads about brands like Rolex compared to other brands. This reaches the branding obsessed zenith when people actually post photos of their watch and car steering wheel badge together. Notice, it's mainly Rolex and Porsche owners that like to do this. Obviously not all owners are like that but that's my experience of different car forums over the years.

I have to say, the Ducati forum is a good place, full of nice and helpful people!

"New" Porsche forums are full of petty idiots arguing about everything and anything. The odd good guy but very much about image and getting one up on everyone else.

Classic Porsche forums are much friendlier and knowledgeable.

Phew!

Mind you, there are an awful lot of specialist forums where owners swear their make is the best ever to have existed on this planet even though they went bust years ago because nobody bought the cars.

E90post (BMW forum), I've never come across such a mix. It's mainly Americans with some Australians, Asians and Europeans thrown in every now and then. Having never come across Americans on forums before, I can safely say that they range from normal, knowledgeable folk to complete bat st crazy "I'm a god damn tuner" so if you don't listen to me then your a piece of st type.

Got to say, reading threads were Aussies plow in and start winding these types of Americans up does make my day.

Nicest car specific forum I ever joined with VX220.org. Great bunch of chaps in general, friendly banter and helpful advice.

Shame I don't own one any more. frown

Well quite, and also forums about things that break all the time will tend to have people who help each other in finding ways to fix them creating a better more cooperative atmosphere.

I've accidentally logged into a few American car forums while searching for DIY solutions to problems. Don't want to appear overly xenophobic but God are they thick!
Well. I have owned a few American cars and the UK based forums have some thoroughly decent blokes. I was however on sn95 forums a few years back and some of the posters there, well, did come across as bit retarded. Some of the technical issue advice was so staggeringly wide of the mark it wasn't funny. It was like the blind leading the blind at times.
Sorry I didn't mean UK forums for American cars (they are usually pretty good). I meant car forums based in America, maybe I'm a bit thick too!

Strangely the best and worst I've experienced were for the same(ish) car.

Best:

Clio V6 owners club, for obvious reasons it was a small club, with great and helpful members and great meets.

Worst:

Cliosport:

Full of angry annoying teenagers who just enjoy arguing and taking the Pi** out of newbie’s.

I notice some people don't like Porsche forums, I can agree on Porsche Club GB, but I have found the TIPEC forum to be great.

In terms of best forums for me with friendly people, the below 3 are well worth a mention:

mkivsupra.net
R8Talk
CCCUK

In terms of terrible forums:

Civic Life (as expected due to the average owner)

I used the RS Owner's Club site for a while. Helpful, friendly people who knew what they were talking about.
What that says for the brand I shall leave to others to decide

M3Torque was a hang out for 4 years for me, really nice friendly place. The Z4 forums seems pretty decent and plenty of the sub forums here are good. I've been lucky to avoid some of the muppetry mentioned above smile

My cars are at the , er... lower end of the market, and I find most of the forums an absolute god-send.

My Citroen XM would have dies several times without the help and advice of its forum
Alfaowners forum users have sent me tools and kit for free just to help keep another car on the road. All based on trust.

Not had the misfortune to be in an unfriendly forum yet.

RS246 is one that I never got at all, the insular thinking on that forum is beyond belief, the abuse I got when I said how poor I found the S4 I had was unreal. In fact all the Audi forums I have used have been like that.

I was asking if anyone had changed the final drive to make the gearing nicer in the UK, or if any anti roll bars helped with the dangerous amounts of understeer?

They just sounded like complete bell ends in total denial of their car purchase choices. The best one was my M3 CSL was st compared the S4 as he had driven one once and there was no air con, no radio and the boot was made of cardboard, when I asked if he was just mentioning everything Clarkson had mentioned in his review, and that spec car was only for the German market anyway, he then said something about the back end comes out on every corner too. rolleyes

Forums where they have insular thinking is always going to be hard work if you have an opinion.

I joined a Porsche forum last year. Bell End central.
911UK I presume, if so yes I agree with you rolleyes
I'm in agreement if it is 911UK. I had some guy PM me saying my newly bought car was dodgy with no evidence to back it up whatsoever. I even had a £8k invoice from Hartech to back up the rebuild and he still questioned that. They all think their 996 Turbos are the best cars on the planet. I think that forum alone is responsible for the inflated price of 996 Turbos generally.

A long time ago I used to frequent an Integrale forum, or it may have been Lancia in general I can't remember, I was utterly disgusted at the never ending bhing and personal attacks.

In my experience in all walks of life the more focused the subject, the more psychotic the participants. Increased generalisation adds some health.

A classic mini forum. Mixed bag - a handful of exceptionally helpful and knowledgeable folk, a plethora of bell ends causing endless petty infighting that led me to stop frequenting that particular forum.
Haha, which one was it and how long ago?
I believe it was called south wales mini club at the time. There was a splinter forum for the exiles...

Must be 5-6 years ago now.

Like I said a few people on there were very helpful, but when the original founder left and the most knowledgeable chap sadly passed away I decided it wasn't worth logging on anymore.

edit - I just logged in. Forum still exists. Seems just the helpful members are left still posting. Sadly another member appears to have passed away since I last visited.

I've been a member of various car forums for different marques.
You tend to find that forums for newer models are quite good and for the most part populated by like minded enthusiasts. But as that model becomes a few years older and second hand prices drop, you start getting the big subs in the boot, mega lows and K&N filter krew joining.

Interestingly though, when we used to detailing open days for car clubs, the car clubs you would expect to be awful, actually turned out to be the better group of people (leaving their car tastes aside)

The best forum bunch were definitely from the Corsa forum.
Worst by a long way were the Renaultsport forum.
BMW, Skyline and Ford RS bunch were all pretty decent people too.

Totally agree. I've found internet forums incredibly helpful in working around cars. It's also amazing how many helpful videos are available on Youtube. thumbup
