Point taken on some Porsche forums, but ImpactBumpers is excellent and has tolerated my low level of expertise with much patience.

Sucks when you want to be in a local car club and there are those who ruin it. I was in the same position. The person who ran it and still does, was a know-it-all. He really thought he was a guru. Could tell what was wrong with a car just from it starting 30 feet away. Total ego driven. Had a few of the more senior members tell me that many avoided going to meets if he was there. As one said, everybody likes him till they get to know him. Really put me off. So I left the club and have even moved on to a new marquee anyway. Life is too short and I have enough drama in my life without dealing with others and their self-esteem issues.

The Meganesport forum used to be really good. Then it got sold off to a company and went to the dogs, meaning existing members split on to two separate forums. I've not been on them for a couple of years, however I am a member of the Facebook page - full of chav tts posting videos of them driving like idiots, then complaining they've been done for speeding / dangerous driving etc, plus the obligatory willy waving contests.....

A mod on a marque and model specific forum is selling his own car. It's the lowest spec level but does have a bit of kit on it. It's being sold as a "launch spec" car whatever that means as it's one of the first of that generation. Knocking on nearly 95k miles and he's asking over dealer prices. Yet everyone is kissing his arse and saying what a wonderful car it is and if they had the funds they'd buy it. A bit like they do on TZ with watches. Are we allowed to mention TZ???

I was a member of the Westfield owners club/forum. They had an open forum so you didn't have to been a paid up member of the Owners club to contribute but....if you said anything derogatory about the club they came down on you like a ton of bricks. The site was controlled by two guys basically, one a Caterham owner who lived in France and the other a garage owner who repaired sports/kit cars. Other members where real beard scratching dheads which was a shame really as it's seen the demise of the Southern section of the club and their meets. Think a lot of Westfield owners now go to Locostbuilders of th SKCC (southern kit car club).

I was a member there for several years, found it very useful in my days of Westfield ownership. I still pop in very occasionally but it's not the site it used to be, very little of interest seems to go on there now.

Are brand specific forums on the decline?

When I first got into MGFs nine years ago, there was a forum - part of a bigger Rover-MG site that was a massive help to me. A huge resource where there was an answer to every question, with 'How To' guides and even members happy to give up time to meet you and help you.

I'm not a someone who joins clubs by nature. I left the Cubs after a week! So I wasn't into going on convoy runs, but it was all available if you wanted it, and many did get genuine fun out of that side.

The site now is just so quiet. A lot of folks have moved on. All the technical info is there still but you have to look for it. The odd regular from old can still be found, but it is a shadow of its former self.

At the same time there are some very busy Facebook groups. Full of a lot of very enthusiastic people but I find folks asking questions, basic stuff that is all just there on the old site. Hell even I the other day was dishing out advice on Facebook. Seriously if you knew me, you'd not want technical advice from me! The poster was getting all sorts of odd answers from plain wrong advice to pointless sympathy like 'Oh Hun, that's sad :-(. '. All well meaning and it was only by chance that I had the same fault that I was able to help and to advise them not to buy the wrong part as it's easy to do. There's a home fix for the fault involving drilling a hole and fabricating something out of plastic. The 'how to' is on the old rarely used site with all the advice you could need.

I can see how the Facebook pages have grown. Easy to use, on your 'phone etc, but there's no resource bank. No way to search 'Wiper motor making grinding noise' or whatever.

There is, FB group pages have a search bar at the top, it's just people cba to use it. It is crap though, FB has ruined the forums which were much better knowledge bases.

This and also when people sell up and move on, "don't do it! Keep it! You'll regret it! Put it in dry storage, it'll be worth a lot more one day!"

I've been quite lucky with the single make forums I've been on - they haven't been populated with nobs! The triumph 2000 register was very friendly - although club triumph could be a little nobby at times... Ukpassats was very friendly and helpful - a little focussed towards modding though. Bmw5.co.uk is also very friendly and knowledgable.

Yes, I've seen that a few times. Some rotten old bodged up dog with high miles and st panel gaps getting bummed up. "Wish I had the cash". ?? I don't think I`ve ever bought a car off a regular forum member. I can came close once and scanned EVERY post they made until I found the car in question had been smashed but that bit was omitted from the advert.
Yet, some of the donkeys that knew this still bigged it up saying it was a `steal` for someone at hardly a great price.

Thinking about it, the best forum I've used is Disco 4, very helpful, knowledgeable and friendly folk, I miss it almost as much as I miss my D4. My least favourite is RS246 (I am on my 3rd RS4 Audi), there's lots of useful stuff but the people on the RS4 section leave me cold in the main, they take brand loyalty to a level beyond rational and there are a handful who regularly challenge one another to sort things out face to face, utter bellends.

Try work related forums, I joined a stone benchtop forum (US) and it has a normal and paid member section. Ask for any form of advice and you get 'pay the membership its worth its weight in gold'. So you have to pay $250 a year to get a sensible answer.

Now, with a membership base of 4.5k members, plus forum sponsers. Thats not a bad way to make money for a not for profit forum.

Reminds me of the old men on the Rover forums. They swear blind that Rovers are the best ever and we are all stupid for not liking them. A few of them even said their Rovers were better than Jaguars and Mercedes. Having been in many Mercs and dozens of BMW's, I have zero idea what drugs they are on. I've owned MG-Rovers and they don't even compare in any way at all, ever, period, fact, over. The 75 is a strong enough built car but my dear god it does not come close to luxury cars.
Every brand has deluded people.

The MG BBS was great for Midget and Sprite owners. I've not been in for while (years) til just now but I've had a quick shufty and it looks just the same with more-or-less the same friendly folks posting and helping and amiably taking the piss out of Triumph owners. Good stuff.

Shame, I was on there many years ago and found it really helpful, same with the 406 Coupe forum. Most enjoyable on I was ever part of was the Citroen AX club, but depressing to think that was over a decade ago. Never got on with the VW Clubs or SXOC, not because it was full of idiots but that I just didn't feel I fitted in. Never got along with Retro Rides either; there are some nice cars but also a lot of bodged and ruined ones, with their "if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything" policy ensuring these shonky projects are encouraged.
