If you turn off the A1 at Biggleswade and head towards Old Warden and the Shuttleworth collection there is a small plot of land with a static caravan on your right.

In addition to the static caravan there is a mobile caravan for sale, a Japanese 4x4 and a 6ft tall winged horse garden ornament something like this...

It would never even occur to me to buy a tv on tick. I drive a van too so I'm council.
Back in the day. I had a girlfriend who's family rented a TV. It had some sort of slot attached and would have to be fed with a coin after so many hours viewing. Old school PPV.

TV wasn't rented. In the 90's the "provie" put the box on the TV to collect funds to repay debts.

Grew up proper council me biggrin
My parents always rented their tv, although I'm not sure why because they were comfortable with money and not council at all (listened to Radio 4 and read the Guardian)

So did mine - it was the only way we could afford the largest TV available on the high street.
Hold on to your hats - all 29" of it!

Back in the days where tv size really was relative to income!

Hold onto your hats! It's OK.

My Dad was a TV producer at a regional ITV company. We had rented TVs, usually the latest Finlandia Set.

We rented on advice from the ITV company's technical department. Apparently colour TVs were very unreliable and it made sense to hire rather than buy.

This was 1970s/80s..

Probably a stock image, but it is an excellent looking cat.

I'm a big fan of big fat lazy smug cats.
Not sure if Moglet cracks one out over the Mrs when I am not there, all he seems to leave on the bed is fur!

Sheer luxury.

Our first telly had a screen the size of a CD jewell case and was finely tuned by my dad, up a ladder, twiddling the aeriel.

I do remember that it was the very first night of ITV, 1955?, and we had just listened to the 'Archers' on the 'Home service' when Grace perished in a stable fire.

Lots of other gems at that time. 'Andy Pandy', 'The Flowerpot men', and for the joker, 'Muffin the Mule'.

Good memories.

Why this on the council thread? We lived in a caravan at the time.

In 1977/78 my brother and I got together and purchased a second hand television (in pretty much new condition) for my parents for Christmas.
Some of you will remember using the type; a channel selector knob with 12-14 channels marked on it, volume, and colour adjustments (my memory is a bit dim on exact details of theirs). Much like this one.

Dad was telling me the other day, that he has to leave channel selection to mother now, she seems to be the only one who has 'the touch' for it.
They still have a record player (in a wood cabinet). Mostly for Christmas time, and just occasionally when mum wants to listen to Mario Lanza or Bing Crosby.

Dad also has a few 'antique' players smile

Watching the news last night and the subject of childhood obesity came up as a news story.
They featured on a group of kids from Wigan who were at some sort of activity center during the school holiday with the aim of, no doubt, shifting a bit of timber!
They cut to the parents (all equally blubber laden) who comment on the great activities and the way they are trying to educate their kids in health eating and the usual guff. Blah Blah Blah etc.....

Then came the part, which I think summed it up for me in terms of "Council"

One little girl was being interviewed and she came out with one single line which made me chuckle.......

...... well, I did try an apple.......

Boom, Council in the first degree!!

biggrin
every time Wigan is on the TV, they always have to interview the inbred oompa loompas and make it seem like we are all retarded individuals frown

yes, I am from Wigan. none of the above ( just ) smile
Sorry, I forgot to add...... my wife is actually from Wigan so whenever I see it mentioned in the media I feel obliged to comment.
I never miss an opportunity to take the p1ss, for example.....

... "don't let the electric lights frighten you", or "see how much smoother these Tarmac roads are, compared to cobbles"! biggrinbiggrinbiggrin
It's one of the advantages of living down south.

strange one from yesterday. took my mum and dad to Morrisons to pick up a few items. i stayed in the car so i could listen to the radio and read my book.

just by where i had parked is one of those metal boxes affixed to the wall for cigarette ends. a chap comes along , unlocks this box and proceeds to put some cigarette ends in his jacket pockets. he definately was not a tramp.

not sure if this counts as council but definately rather strange
