The language doesn't really help does it...

"4x4 Response have been put in full deploy mode after being requested to attend by the Glastonbury Festival organisers. We are working in conjunction with the Police to ensure the safe evacuation of festival goers and their vehicles from the festival grounds. We currently have 30 vehicles deployed with 15 on standby. One of Wessex 4x4 Incident Support Units has also been deployed"

When my bottle of red was getting low earlier I went into standby mode, when I ran dry I went into full deployment and ventured to the cellar.

I am sure they are doing a great job and helping people who would otherwise be stuck by they are pulling a few cars out of the mud. If any of them were actually deployed or stood to anywhere real they wpuld be sobbing into their hi vis

4x4 Response have been asked by the Police and festival organisers if we could help as people leave the Glastobury site on Monday.
The grounds are very muddy so we have 30 of our volunteers at the site, to pull out stuck cars as required. Another 15 of our volunteers can be called on if extra assistance is needed. Because it's such a busy festival one of the 4x4 Support vans has also set up on site. It's a muddy one this year so we really hope we can help some tired festival goers get home on time!

Why not write something like that instead?

This is why people on this thread are taking the piss - it's the pseudo-military speak - evacuation, deploy....cue dramatic music!!

Exactly.

Doing people a good turn is admirable but trying to convince yourselves and others you are the 4th emergency service, military trained or the fking A-Team is just belittling some of good stuff they actually do.

I thought that was another thread!!!

There goes my chance of being promoted to 4x4 Response Deputy Gold Command Police Laison Committee Officer this year.

How I coveted that extra stripe on the 4x4 and the badge on my high-vis.

So stupid, schoolboy error!!

For christ sake man, you can't just volunteer you have to go throughs years of rigorous training on using a tow rope, imagine the chaos if Joe Public rolled up just because they own a 4x4.

But hey, what would I know? I'm only a member of a highly professional organisation, trained by time served off road instructors, that the normal emergency services often turn to for volunteer manpower, or logistical help in extreme circumstances.
Professional? Do me a favour. The lot I saw (at a larger non-"response" LR event) were an embarrassment, bedecking their vehicles with misleading/non-compliant high visibility graphics and lighting, swanning about the place like they were a cut above the rest of society and that having the words "Emergency Response" across your back window and a yellow light bar front and rear gives you a waiver against the event traffic planning that everyone else seems happy to comply with.
And what's this about the "normal" emergency services? Are you seriously suggesting the 4x4 Response movement is a niche service that somehow picks up where real blue light responses fall short? Have you any idea just how condescending and self-important that comes across as?
CC I would not trust you with my dog let alone extreme circumstances.
Hopefully not Andrew Nay, though, eh?

Not the greatest advertisement for 'professionals' nor 'off-road driving instructors' really...

They have to be right angled, green, made by GEC and army surplus.

Where do we stand on glow sticks? I've seen them used to marshal helicopters so when tooling up to prepare and man a HLS* should these be things that the 4x4 responders use to wave at mere members of the public while ordering them around?

  • HLS. Was a model designation for 1970s and 1980s British Leyland cars but to those 'in the know' it means helicopter landing site. Keep that to yourself though. We don't want Joe Public bandying around phrases like that in an irresponsible manner.

When my bottle of red was getting low earlier I went into standby mode, when I ran dry I went into full deployment and ventured to the cellar.
In fairness the language is 90% of the problem.

If they just biffed along to help out, that'd be great. Sort of as an off-roady club that can pitch in when needed.

It's this cod military language which is the baffling bit to me.

I watched the news yesterday and saw a brand new AA LR struggling like hell to recover people from the site. Looking at the conditions, I'd imagine tractors are the way forward.

Not 30 fat, out of shape men, in knackered old 4x4's that I'd imagine will just slide around in any case.

I'm sure there are one or two walts with something decent with good mud tyres on, but the posted picture doesn't exactly show the 4th emergency service.

They demonstrated how to get round this in a video from an earlier post

You just lash multiple 4x4's together, eventually the one on the end will be on some tarmac !
