I met a man who could wear decorations from both sides in the same conflict.

He was a naval surgeon in the Falklands war and saved the lives of the injured regardless of nationality. After the war, Argentina awarded him a medal. He told me that he asked for advice on wearing it. The message back from Buckingham palace was that he was to wear it with pride alongside his British medals.

The man in question was called Rick Jolly. He died last year. An inspirational man.

All those years with one eye on the phone have finally paid off.

You have been ACTIVATED.
When I heard about this I thought of this thread, and my first post which started it.

They'll all be there, brandishing multiple lanyards, hoping to pick up some more official documents. Captain Mainwearings assuming they control things when they don't. Stickered-up old Discoveries a plenty. Comments of "We really should be using blue lights" from the ranks of hi-fi's wearing bearded beer-bellied men.

There'll be dreams of road blocks. Blue-lighting medics. Callsigns issued, and used correctly. Now's the time to fit that LED light bar lads.

All the while, quiet, socially conscious dedicated people step-up and just get on with it.

Do they prefer Bang and Olufsen or maybe Denon? Which sits better on their beer bellies?

This American Walt ticks lots of boxes.

Badge waring, police radio, radar, handcuffs, breathalyser, Asp, pepper spray lots of lights, warrant enforcer, some sort of radio ham volunteer, firefighter, dog handler, and more...

The genuine cops can't quite believe it...

It seems he's truck is better equipped than the genuine police who pull him over.

I'm not suggesting Waiting but has the way veterans dress changed ?

I'm thinking back to the 1980s and 1990s, where retired chaps would attend Remembrance days, with a fairly modest row of medals, or none. Your see the occasional beret too. My uncle had 3 or 4 campaign medals from his time in the RAF in North Africa and Italy. Another uncle an ex WW2 RSM didn't wear any.

Now many veterans seem to wear lots of medals and blazers with embroidered insignia on them.

I'm not suggesting they're not entitled to do this but it's quite a contrast to the nearly gone WW2 generation I knew as a kid.

Mid 1990s, the HMS Kelly Reunion Association. From memory, they were dressed the same when they marched in the procession behind the gun carriage at Mountbatten's funeral in 1979:

I have a painting of her on one if my walls. She exemplifies everything I love about the RN and being a Geordie, Tyne built ships.

(I’m a civvy but was lucky enough to have a role which brought me into close contact with the RN.)

Jackets and blazers are just readily available now. Order one though your local association or club.

I just wear a suit but given its November I normally have a big coat on.
That makes sense, cheers

So you’ve turned up at an airport after a crash that has probably killed or maimed your loved ones and instead of proper officials and police liaison staff you get a Jim’ll Fix It style badge from Derek and Anne before various other busybodies fart around.

I’m surprised organisations like Airports and emergency services give these sort of people the time of day.

Surely this is what the Red Cross and Salvation Army do well, without the need for Hi-Viz and two decade old Discoveries?

My recently late uncle was in the USMC - leaving just before Vietnam.

He travelled no further than Pearl Harbour and was mildly amused and embarrassed by his "veteran" status with the adoration and discounts he received.

He told me that he did and saw more in his subsequent career as a firefighter and then a police armoury manager (not a police officer) in a sleepy Mid West town.

Mind you, when he died he did have his ashes committed to the Pacific off the back of a US warship.

He hasn't even bothered to do basic research. HMS Bulwark was laid-up and out of service in 1982.

I never expected this thread to get to 300-plus pages.

I know I'm going to come across as a bit Walty "Respect meh authorateih!" here but so be it.

The thread is supposed to be a light hearted piss take of self important pompous people. I reckon we should acknowledge this guy fits the criteria, maybe have a laugh but be aware that he may have issues - and move the thread on.

I'm sure you'll all thank me for my kind words.

Apparently you can get a form of authority (well, a smart card actually) that entitles you to block the Queen's Highway, although from the description of the incident most people could have coped without weak squash and Hi-Viz

This will not be popular. Every Walt knows the more lanyards and associated accreditation - made on a home laminating machine - you have, the more seniority you have and therefore the more authority you command.

Note key words: Seniority. Authority. Command. The holy trinity of Walting.

As you were.

Channel 4 news had some prime material for this thread on tonight; someone called Gary Ross representing some wacko antivax group called the Alpha Men or similar. Loonies gathering in a public park, grunting at each other and playing tug of war paints quite a picture. He didn't have a lanyard or a tabard though, so perhaps he's only pretending to be be a loony. The bloke at the end literally stroking his beard summed the whole thing up for me.

That really is disturbing. In the first post on this thread, I saw a lot of Walts, misfits etc in a humorous light. There’s nothing funny about these blokes.

A mixture of individuals all satisfying a need. For recognition, to have authority, to mix with similar people who for what ever reason are inadequate.

I’d be really interested to see the demographic here. I wonder for example, how many work in companies and how many work alone. I’m thinking here about peer pressure that you’d get spouting this nonsenses amongst colleagues Vs. working as a one man band where you’ve only yourself as a reference point.

How many are married, divorced or never married?

What proportion are ex-military and indeed if ex-military what regiment and what rank did they achieve.

How many have mental health issues or forms of autism etc?

These people fascinate me, and not in a good way. The tin foil hat wearing conspiracy theorist in me makes me wonder if they are being organised by someone or something. A far right group? I wonder when and if they have crossed a line to become subjects of interest to Special Branch or MI5.

Is this a record 0-60 time for someone to mention the army and Hereford?

I’d not even taken a sip of my first pint as I stood at the bar of a favourite pub. A long and taxing day called for a beer before home and unusually the pub was empty apart from me, and this other guy.

He wanted to know all about me, engage me in conversation. “So, are you a lawyer, or a doctor, what is it you do?” I was politely passive in my response but despite this normally discouraging behaviour (I’m normally happy to chat but I was knackered.) he told me in the time it took to get served that he was ex-Royal Anglian Regiment, that he had been a sniper “based in Hereford.”

To be fair, by his look he could have been. A wiry, fell runner type physique, and softy spoken. Not some big hard man mouthing off, but his eagerness to tell me all about himself makes me doubt it.

Because it identifies the group leader. what is the issue?

When I worked, half my boot was full of PPE, orange for British Rail and some quarry sites, yellow for most other sites. When I went on military sites the guards usally had hi vis jackets on as did the lead and last soldier in a squadron moving on roads. Does that mean we are all walts?
Off topic. Perhaps you might answer a question I’ve got.

Is there a reason why railway Hi-Viz is orange compared with regular yellow Hi-Viz.
