Went to the dentists yesterday, 1:30 appointment, I was out at 1:33. She looked in my mouth, counted each tooth, gave me the opportunity of smelling some garlic on her gloves, Told me I was fine see you in six months.

Charged me £19.70. That is almost £400 an hour.

A bit bloody dear.

Sounds bloody cheap to me, Less than £20 for their services. There has to be a minimum charge else its nit worth doing!

Was you expecting to be charged £1.99 as it only took a few moments??

£19.70 is the standard NHS rate for an examination.

Quite and if you need major work it will cost no more than £230 ish for all visits. They take longer than 2 minutes.

Once you've had major work. More than happy to hand over £20 quid and told those words see you in six months and not Root Canal hehe

You are absolutely right, been over 10 years since I have had any work done, not even a filling so I guess I should count my blessings and not my bank balance.

I can live with the examination charge, and would agree that being told you are "all good" is one of the sweetest moments in life... i have something of a phobia of dental work and have just gone through a crown fitting that ended up being a bit of a disaster and quite traumatic (for me).
However, what is frustrating is that my practice refuses to do scale & polishes as part of the Band 1 fee (which is included under the guidelines) - and instead insist you see their private hygienist for something like £50.

I've just paid the same for my exam although if you ask them to do a scrape and clean you get that thrown in for the price. they don't do it as standard but you don't pay more for it when you get your check up.

A kick in the ballsack is probably less painful, though.

Look lads, my Sister and her husband are both (private ) dentists and own their own practice where they work very hard.
They live in a large farmhouse and send all 3 of their children to private school.
Because of this, she is in abject poverty and they have had to reduce their holidays to just the twice a year.
I am seriously considering starting a "just giving" page or contacting Bob Geldof to arrange a "dentist aid" to help them out.
What do you think I should do?

I feel your pain stuartmmcfc, my dentist has to make do with a brand new Audi RS4, I mean, imagine the shame!?
He also has a very nice detached house in an affluent suburb of Bristol.

It must be simply awful!!

Console yourself with the thought that they're both more likely to top themselves than you are?

I've been paying that every 6 months for years and am over the moon when I hand over the fee as it means I've escaped any major work. Embrace the £19.70!

This is actually very true. I put it down to the fact that there's a lot of study involved in becoming a dentist which naturally attracts the sort of person who likes to cut them selves off from the "party" and stay in reading books ie. not "people persons". Now combine this with the fact, very few people actually like going to the dentist and it's no wonder then gas oven needs a close inspection IMO.

Don't complain. My NHS dentist wasn't doing their job properly every 6 months and I seemed to be having a lot of issues without them being picked up.

I gave up with NHS and went private and he sorted me out and found all the problems the NHS one should have found.

2 gold crowns, 1 composite filling and 2 implants later costing the best part of £7k I'm back where I should of been.

I managed to get £500 out of the NHS dentist for poor workmanship but the rest I had to swallow with my dental insurance and my own money. I'm very happy with the private work I have had done and will never walk into an NHS surgery again.
