A mate of mines mum has a Fiat Coupe 16 valve non turbo, she stuck it in a dry garage some years ago when she got a new car and it hasnt moved since and has now decided to move it on.

Having had a look, they arent worth a whole lot but apparently this Broom Yellow example is very straight bodily, well compared to a lot that are now succumbing to tin worm, I dont think the 16 valve is massively colectible but there are only 60 or so left, and I am guessing a lot will be on borrowed time. I suppose it could be a good option for someone with a ropey 20VT that needs re-shelling.

Its been there like ten years or something, so I guess would need tyres, cam belt, fluids.

Whats the best way of getting rid of it ?

'Dry' garages range from dust bowls to damp in winter rust traps.

Really depends. Change the oil, pull the plugs, change the battery and turn it over a few times, put the plugs back in and give it a go.

Tyres will have cracked tyre walls if flat, but are past their use by date even if kept inflated.

Mice may have torn the electrics to bits,

Just give it a go, see if it runs then at least you can flog it on eBay as a runner.

Ugly is in the eye of the beholder, I love the looks, an unmolested Sprint Blue one with black cloth seats would be my choice as the leather has all the grip of marble.

They dont, as standard handle that well, but set up properly they are pretty good for a 90s front drive hatch based coupe.

Rusty, hmm, no worse than anything else of the time, last one was made 17 years ago, this one is apparently pretty solid having been in a garage.

Been in a few, never found them rattly, but we get it, you dont like them, that is allowed

Even we'll set up ones don't handle that well.

Have you looked underneath? Front chassis rails and up under the petrol / rear beam mounts are usually bad

Stick some fresh fuel in it and a jump pack and see.

90% of cars will run.

Some will have seized fuel pumps, corroded fuses etc

If it starts book an MOT and take it from there.

No, I have just been asked what the situation is re getting rid, I think she perhaps thinks its worth more than it actually is, hard to value, to someone its a rare opportunity to get an allegedly straight shell, to the rest of us its a not very interesting version of an Italian coupe based on a Fiat Tipo, I had a turbo and it was disaster, but I still have a soft spot for them, I think if its as good as its sounds bodily it could be recomiisioned into a cheap, mildly interesting car for someone on a budget, if you do without the performance of the 20VT that is, might be a decent enough drive if you arent expecting the last word in handling and performance.

I think it deserves to survive, very few left, its always a bit predictable when people save halo models only

Properly asses the state, then offer it up on some enthusiast forums (fiatforum?), if anyone is going to like it, itll be those blokes, and if it is only good for re-shelling a 20vt, that'll be the place you find the guy who needs a new shell.

Mind you, even a properly cared for 16v should be a fun car.

Is there an Owners club / Forum you could ask or post on to gauge interest, true what you say about
saving non halo models.

I'd disagree. I had a 16v briefly between two 20vts, to call it gutless was an understatement, and it came equipped with biscuit tins instead of wheels. Without the 5cyl warble, its nothing.

yuck

Well, you may or may not be at all interested but said Fiat Coupe is back up and running, after a service, new tyres, cambelt, new brakes (disk/pads), battery and an MOT it is back on the road, he just popped round in it and it really is tidy, some very minor blemishes but basically what you would have expected at three years old back in 1999, 78k, two owners. Went out in it, things have moved on, engine sounds nice, does what is should and though its not fast per se, it picks up speed with some enthusiasm.

Must be one of the best left out there now, pity its not a 20V Turbo but it stands him at very little in the scheme of things, he just going to run it for a year or two.
