I also have Camo from above, so I am invisible really.

You may scoff but if you look closely I am actually standing behind that trestle in a brick painted dust suit.

As for being an Amateur well, how many professionals do you know who use spitfire pellets. hehe

That's not a trestle, it's a fully operational combat module. Those Scottish squirrels are doomed I tell 'ya.

Scottish squirrels are ginger, we're not allowed to shoot them frown . Unless some of the grey ones sneak over the border.smile

To answer the OP's question, yes a .22 will certainly do the job. I'd avoid a break barrel though, they're not as accurate.
For popping off a squirrel any decent breakbarrel (HW95K for example) is more than accurate up to about 30 metres.

Let's just say that the floppyness of the breakbarrel joint doesn't assist with my aim. Need all the help I can get.

I used to use an air rifle for pest control until I expanded the shotgun collection and had to sell, unfortunately shotguns aren't really good for the task. Most of the land isn't suitable for using them and when you do it tends to make a lot of mess.

My method now is the olde trap and bludgeon.... not sure what the sexual perversion guy would make of that but I do sometimes wake up wearing (only) a tutu and having no recollection of the night before
I've got a couple of shotguns at home too. I've resisted the temptation to use them on squirrels.
My grandad used to take them out with a shotgun though. I always remember laughing at his shot peppered bird feeders wink

We have a nutter in our area who was popping cats off with an air rifle so offing squirrels shouldn't be a problem.

This man is the answer for the OP Squirrel Hunter

He does the job, and creates a fully narrated documentary that can be shared on the thread.

Did anyone else run into the Hog Hunters NSFV after watching the tannerite clip posted by Vandenberg?
Very NSFV (Not Safe For Vegetarians)

For anyone who regrets not having been in Vietnam as a Huey door gunner.

ETA
Sorry both clips quite NSFV

Well this has taken a turn for the worse.

Just to clarify I have never killed anything that wasn't trying to kill me.

We went to Antalya - Delphin palace and one of the afternoon past times was target shooting on the beach. My then 10 YO loved it, so when back home I went to the local gunsmiths to buy s cheap rifle for plinking.

When in the shop I saw a W&S hurricane which reminded me of my youth, so I bought that for reminiscent sake, then I saw the Zoraki pump and the scopes/lasers/mag lites/ mounts/reticle displays/etc , so a cheap plinker turned into something else, as usual.

I would rather have a target match with my son than kill something for sport, in fact I would rather shoot at bottles or links cans than living things.
Likewise, I just don't get this, the squirrels don't know that the food is not for them, crazy really, just don't feed the birds then, simples!

I find it funny how the shooters are making it sound like they're doing a public service, it is for sport!

Anyone who gets their kicks killing animals troubles me. If you find squirrels in your loft yeah call in the professionals, if in your garden well just let'em be eh!

Does one have a man to wipe one's bottom also? wink

Not everyone has the modern propensity to call the council or hire staff to do jobs that are easy enough and cheaper to do oneself.

Participating in an organised or coordinated regional programme to eradicate an invasive and damaging species from an area IS a public service - but only under those circumstances. Otherwise it's just wasteful killing and completely pointless. People who find it pleasurable are… really worrying. Satisfaction in a job well done is rather different. (See also: the MASSIVE campaign to rid the Galápagos Islands of various invasive mammals, to huge effect now it's done. Project Isabela.)

Pointed hunting pellets are essential. They are far more effective than round nosed pellets.
Back in the day, I used to have .177 cal feathered darts. Are these the same thing? I imagine lethal with a body shot.
Im highly sceptical about pointed 'hunting' pellets. Domed are far more accurate and probably delivery more energy.

Darts are for playing with.

I do feel that a lot of the people taking the anti-pest control stance here have never had to deal with a real problem in their life...

.177, .20, .22 or .25 will all do the job, the primary requirement is to be accurate which needs practice.

If you are going out to get a rifle for pest control then consider where you will practice first etc.

For the record, shooting is a fun, disciplined past time to be encouraged not villified.

They had a squirrel issue at a warehouse where my dad works. One of the chaps is a bit of a hunter, so he rigged up a trap.

One day, they went into work and a squirrel was in the trap. As they all stood around looking at it, it was snarling and sort of barking at them. It was also going nuts at the cage trying to get out.

The chap who trapped it went outside, calmly walked back in with an air rifle, pointed it at the squirrel in the cage, fired and took most of it's head off at point blank range.

Now, I'm a wildlife fan, but am not bothered about pest control.

EFA wink

(It's impossible to do so much damage with a tiny lead pellet measuring circa 5mm across.)
