Completely agree wth the above.

I have a HW95k with a 6-9x40 scope and it's perfect for killing dirty tree-rats. Also good for flying rats (pigeons) and bouncy rats (rabbits).

If you have access to a compressor, then a pcp would be a good choice.
It would be a serious compressor to have on hand, the fill pressure on the two PCP's that I had was 200Bar!
I have a stirrup pump for mine, but it was chuffing expensive. £100+ or something

Seems weird having a food table for one type of garden wildlife but asking one's internet friends for ways to kill other wildlife types.

I think squirrels are great little creatures and have a feeder for them in my garden.

A lot of people seem to write with glee about killing them, probably some sort of sexual perversion under the surface there as well. Do you get a little twinge in the nethers every time you off one? Make you feel all big and powerful?

I had a problem with with a rat ON the bird feeder and three smaller ones picking up the seed on the ground. I bought a BSA springer and tele sight, I only paid £300 all in. Did the job just fine.
As has been said though, you would need a head shot for a clean kill with a squirrel.

They are on the virmin list. Many years ago you used to get sixpence per squirrel If you killed them.

What about a paint ball gun? It might not kill them but they'd feel really self consciousyes

tree rats take eggs and young birds, as well as doing damage to trees,
they kill and out compete the reds, kill them on sight.

How, in the name of the Holy Pustule of Preston, did you come up with that little gem of sanctimony?

We got one of these. So far seems to be working ok. When a bird is on it, the weight of the bird is ok. When a squirrel gets on it, his/her weight pulls down a solid cage to shut off the nuts.

If you genuinely want population control rather than food nicking control:
a) don't bother unless there is a local grey squirrel reduction thing happening or it just will not work and you'll be shooting an endless supply of them - they breed so fast and are so mobile that you'll just create a kind of mild population vacuum, eternally refilled, without ever actually successfully keeping them off the feeder. See also why trapping, spay/neutering and releasing feral cats works far better than euthanasing them for population control.
b) humane trap and then shoot/clobber at very close range has got to be the way to go, surely, in terms of guaranteed immediate dispatch, if you conclude that you are gonna be offing them. But if it's just you in the area, then don't, really.

I am in general a fuzzy wuzzy don't kill stuff type leftie but I put ecosystems over individual critters and it's pretty damned clear-cut in red squirrel areas.

Do greys affect pine martens? I know they're slowly starting to move down from Scotland.

They affect them by providing a very ready supply of very easy to catch fat and slow dinners, apparently. lick

Rats were the cause of the bubonic plague, but that's some time ago. I propose to you any disease a rat could spread a squirrel could equally carry.

Yet I assume you don't share the same animosity with squirrels that you do with rats, do you?
EH? I shoot both on sight.

And yes Dromedary you're quite right it's sexual too. I wrap cellotape around them ( to stop them splitting ) once I've shot them then dry bum them.
