I recently visited the Nurburgring for the first time and I've really got the bug. I did four hugely enjoyable laps in my own car and then had a ride out in the Ring Taxi which showed me what's possible when you know the place. I'm not looking to try to set amazing times in my own car as such, but what held me up the most was not knowing whether the next crest obscured a lovely long straight and I could keep it nailed or a 90° left that would see me in the Armco.

As such I want a PS4 game that I can learn the track on. I appreciate that you don't experience the track, but something that I can learn where the corners are and arrive next time a bit more prepared. Which would be the best PS4 game for this?

Something like Project Cars or Assetto Corsa (when it comes out) is what you are probably looking for. I don't know if any other racing games have the Nurburgring, I know Forza does, but thats on the Xbone...

Project Cars is probably your best bet.

Just be prepared to take each corner in real life at less than half the speed you do in the game! And remember that each time you crash in the game, in real life you'd have lost both your own car + ten grands worth of barriers. Then start thinking about the many bikers or 911 GT3's that could slip and crash on the oil you could have dropped... Because you'll probably be paying go fix those, too.

Lovely place hehe

Cheers guys. I'll have a look at Project Cars. I was acutely aware of my lack of insurance and the consequences. I was lucky it was a pretty quiet day when I was there. I tip-toed round my first couple of laps, but got faster as my confidence grew. I intend to go back later this year and just want a bit of experience on where a can go faster and where I need to back off.

So I can pick up Project Cars for £20 on Amazon, but can I dive straight into driving the ring? I've never been a fan of driving games and I can't be arsed investing many hours in a career until I can unlock a track. I just want to sit down and "drive" the ring until I get a better knowledge of which crest is which.

Yeah PC is good for that. Quick Race, just hop in any car / track.

No GT style grind!

Project cars is crap with a controller, but yes you can jump straight into the ring.

Thanks again. I'm not buying it for the gameplay so I'm not overly worried if it's crap with a controller. Just to learn the track. Order placed.

From memory you only have to slow down in three places,

The first few corners at the gp track entrance.

The blind left at the top of fuchshorer, (where the tree line goes straight on).

Entrance to the carousel.

Everything else is flat wink

Depends on what car you drive. Project Cars is a tricky bd if you do practice mode because you start on cold tyres.

Honestly this is such bks. Three places?

I sometimes wonder about the mind set of some people on PH.

You take the grass between the first few corners, back on track in a four wheel drift; let the tyres drag the car down to speed.

Call yourself a powerfully built racing driver???? hehe

Yeah fair point... I was discussing trackday lines rather than full on racing lines though smile

If you spent 10 minutes setting up your controller it's pretty good to be fair,
Some cars (like the baby go karts) are awful and some are just weird (the Atom 500 V8 feels like a bloody beach buggy) but some cars like The McLaren MP4-12c GT3 car and even the Pagani Hyuehruererhueh are actually quite surprisingly fun and yet challenging.

Sure it's far better with a wheel, but my friend and I play as often as we get a chance with game pads and have some good races.

Project cars is crap, but unfortunately there's not much else around at the moment!

I take it all back! Assetto Corsa + the Nurburgring DLC is the closest to real life I've played.

In fact, it's quite scary because the accidents I had in the game are carbon copy of where / how most YouTube videos depict real accidents. A genuinely serious reminder that you can be having the time of your life, thinking you're amazing, only for the 5% of a likelihood - be it a curb, bump or camber - to come alive and bite you on the arse.

Project Cars is quite benign and forgiving by comparison.

now that you have ordered Project Cars, spend 10 mins youtubing how to setup the controller. it will make your driving experience 10 times better and you will actually have half a chance staying on the track and not bouncing off the armco. Also the Pagani Hyara is a great car and some of the LM ones. but work your way up. you can go seriously fast in a go kart but their very hit or miss with some people. Also try some of the other tracks like laguna seca and brands to get a feel of the game. The Ring can be a tiresome long haul when youre getting used to the dynamics of the game.

Good Luck

Just remember, the games are excellent for learning the layout, but they don't really capture the slipperiness of some of the tarmac there. Otherwise, games can be very useful for learning the road. I've done hundreds of virtual laps of it.

Project cars with the Megane RS, the Aston GT12/3 race car is great. The cars are difficult to drive, but not so much so you lose patience, the tracks are very well done and it can be a proper challenge.

I had put in quite a few hours on Project cars learning the layout, and found when we were at the ring last week I was getting the apexes and exits pretty spot on straight away, so it is a very useful tool to learn where the circuit goes etc, but be prepared for the effects of compression and surface unevenness, and as said the slippery bits.

I've got both and just find Pcars more accessible than AC, hence why I chose pcars.
