Why does he need to dig himself out? He asked anonymously for relationship advice on a forum. He didn't name her. He wants to end the relationship... ...not the best way to end, but nor does the OP have any explaining to do per se...

He's showing consideration for her feelings; that's why he's asking for advice. His mates are going to be biased & uncaring - he wanted an unbiased, kind/thoughtful pov (which is possible hear sometimes)In front of hundreds of people online, but still!
