I've seen the Virgin long haul girls party...like a rugby team on tour!
I used to live with some virgin cabin crew. They were always having to change hotels because their behaviour was so bad down route that the hotels didn't want their business.

One of them was always in trouble at work, I had to keep driving her to their HQ in Crawley to get told off all the time as she'd been banned for drink driving. They were like a younger version of absolutely fabulous. I couldn't take living there for more than a year.

Sure their pay was crap but they absolutely loved their job. I doubt they were jealous of any of you PH misogynists and your much more glamorous and exciting jobs.
Wonder if we met some of the same, coz these girls were a single guy's dream! Not me, I wasn't single at the time. Very professional next day on the flight/s, and then once they'd cleared up would sit at the bar for a good chin-wag. Regular flying meant easy recognition both ways. Good times. That was back when you would get a massage on the plane too!

It seems to me that the role of Air Hostess is best described as sitting somewhere between waitress and fly-pitcher!

Glamorous? It certainly doesn't look it.

I asked for other's thoughts.

Thanks for your contribution anyway.

My personal view is it's a job with very unsocial hours, that is not as glamourous as is usually perceived.
Roll your eyes all you like.

There is a world of difference between a "flight attendant" and a highly skilled pilot.

Like comparing a West coast main line train driver to a ticket inspector/guide.
Your use of inverted commas around their job title, adjective 'highly skilled' before pilot and the driver / ticket inspector comparison certainly read in a pejorative way to me.

ffs!

If that's your perception fine.

I posed a question, pure and simple, and added my thoughts.

Roughly half agree with me, half don't....fair enough.

I never even mentioned the word pilot in my post btw.

That's exactly what I meant, why start a thread putting down someone else's job? Seems weird to me.
In my OP I said:-

This is no reflection on the ladies concerned, they all do a great job. (Male staff as well)

Hardly "putting them down".
What's no reflections not the ladies concerned? The fact that you've just pointed out all you think is wrong with their job and asked if they might be glorified skivvys in the thread title?
To be honest he "asked" what people though in the OP, and then said his reasoning for thinking it wasn't glorified despite the image it has. From quite a few of your posts you have agreed with him on the job, but just come to a different conclusion (saying it is bad pay/ long hours etc). It's the internet - people have opinions and discuss them. Surely you can understand why some people don't like it - it seems to be something that people would either love or hate. If it was something you didn't like then it is a glorified waitress/ waiter for the most part (hopefully they don't ever have to use the extra tasks in saving people). Same goes for a lot of offshore work - huge pay for a "normal" job on land, but with the result that you don't have much flexibility in your free time when on the platform or rig.

It's a bit like Monaco in F1 - some people regard it as rubbish because you can't overtake. Others say it is the best race in the calendar because of the glamour. Just depends on what you count as important.

I used to go out with an Emirates stewardess (or whatever they're called).

She was absolutely smashing! The strict regulations about how fat they were allowed to get kept her in good shape as well whilst I was able to grow as corpulent as I wished. Terrible really, but it's the world we live in I suppose.

She said that on a lot of the flights to Southern India, they had problems with people standing on the toilet seats to st. And one occasion where a bloke was so proud of having shat in a toilet, he burst out and charged back into the cabin to get his mates to show them his delightful offering, curled up like a glistening viper in the bowl. Makes you think, doesn't it.

Apparently one girl fell pregnant out of wedlock (gasp!) and the company found out whilst they were stopped off in Lagos. Immediately terminated her employment and booted her out the staff accommodation into the city on her own. She was skint too, so the rest of the girls clubbed together to buy her a ticket home. Sadly, the only flight available was with Emirates, which added some insult to injury. Perhaps it's an apocryphal tale but she seemed to think it had happened.

Half agree with what? You just said you hadn't stated whether you thought it was a rubbish job or not, apparently you were just asking others what they thought? hehe

A mate of mine's wife is cabin crew for BA. I don't think the job itself is remotely glamorous from the sound of it (which tallies with my perception when flying), and the novelty of long haul stopovers in gorgeous locations does wear very thin once you've got your other half and your kids left behind.

The flipside, however, is that they're forever off for nice holidays for peanuts because they pay sod all for flights. I really don't understand how they get it past BIK rules, and don't get taxed for what it would cost Joe Bloggs to fly.

As for the pilots, I imagine if you've trained up directly as an airline pilot, it's a great job. If, on the other hand, you've moved over from being an RAF fast jet pilot, surely there has to be an element of feeling like a Derby winner suddenly finding itself towing a rag and bone cart?

I agree with you entirely. It's up to everyone whether they think it's a good job or not for whatever reasons.

I was just saying, it seems a bit odd and unpleasant to start a thread about someone else's job saying it's not as good as some people might think it is. Nobody's asking him to do it. It might be a dream job for someone else. Why start a thread putting down other people's choice of career?

If someone randomly and with no experience of the job pompously started a thread saying "working in IT must be st, no offence to IT workers but it looks really rubbish, what do others think?" people would all be kicking off.

There are plenty of jobs I wouldn't like to do but I'm not going to start a thread telling people that do the job, that I think ithey have a crap job,

Well maybe wacky racer will start a thread about it and people can all comment on whether its st or not. Perhaps we'll even have mysterious anecdotes about IT workers who lived with us for a time but who had terrible secrets.

Anyway I've been on my soapbox for far too long, so I'm going to do you all a favour and bugger off. Apologies everyone for derailing the thread.

Surprised she kept her job. Time was when Virgin expected pretty much perfect behaviour in and out of work. They considered their hosties ambassadors for the airline. They weren't even allowed to eat in public whilst wearing the uniform.
