I was talking about the cabin crew - they may parade up and down serving drinks and selling tat, but their main purpose is to do whatever they can to get people off the plane when it goes belly-up. Remember, they are the ones who know their way around in the dark, in smoke, know how to release the exit doors / windows etc.

However, the flight crew really do earn their money when something happens that the computer cannot cope with - be it mechanical failure, or adverse weather.
