Thinking of buying a Golf R as my daily with a view to 'upgrade' it to a Stage 2 tune of approx 370- 400 using APR or Revo.

Question is as the OE clutch is pretty pants and won't handle these power levels (even stock clutches are known to fail) will DSG soak up heavy track usage as they can tend to overheat and cause selection problems whilst on track.....especially pre Gen VAG platforms ie ED30 Mk6R and S3.

Is there a decent reliable clutch upgrade or is the new DSG stronger?

I note the RS3 uses a 7 speed DSG....I assume it's stronger still?

The DSG box on the Mk7 Golf R is the 6-speed wet clutch unit - wet meaning the clutch packs are oil cooled. This means they rarely suffer from overheating and can absorb significantly more energy (power) and abuse than a dry clutch system.

Provided the gearbox isn't thrashed from cold, is service correctly and you aren't constantly launching the car, it's a hardy unit which, unless you're unlucky, will cause you few issues.

Yes. They couldn't reliably put the 6 speed in an RS3.

I assume the 6 speed DSG is as 'strong' as the 7 speed version as fitted to the RS3?

The only danger / concern is a very expensive repair to the DSG box if it fails?

I know from APR's MK6R on DSG running theitr stage 3 kit @ 450-465 that the box ran into selection problems when hot on tack....I witnessed that mysel? Have they made any major improvements on the MK7?

The RS3 wet clutch unit is significantly stronger to cope with the higher torque of the 2.5l lump.. hence the six speed wet clutch unit not being used.

The mk7 golf box is basically the same as the mk6 unit in terms of torque limits.. aftermarket clutch packs are available if that's the route your thinking.

Run a standard stage 2 engine/mechanical set up with a DSG that's had a software map and you should be fine on DSG, however, start pushing the power/torque figures up above that and you'll be looking into big numbers for upgrades if it goes t!ts up.

There's a lad on the owners club running just over 400/400 on a manual car with an uprated clutch and he's had zero issues from what I gather... and it's far more fun with three pedals anyway. winksmile
