Hi all,

SWMBO and I have a night away without kids booked near Oxford for Thursday night and plan to spend the next day (Friday) wandering around in Oxford. Neither of us have been before. We'll be parking up outside the city and getting a park & ride into town.

Had been looking at various walking tours but I think we've decided we'd rather just wander around ourselves.....unless you know different ?

What are the highlights in Oxford City Centre we shouldn't miss ? We were planning to have a late breakfast in our hotel then get into Oxford mid morning & look for a decent café for cream tea mid-afternoon v finding a restaurant.

Recommendations for things to do and cafe's for cream tea (we prefer quaint type cafés rather than hotel places).

Thanks for any insider knowledge....

Pitt Rivers museum is a must IMO - I could spend all day in there. Inspector Morse walking tours - even if you can't stand the series they are a great way to be shown round the city.

Hire a punt from the Head of the Ruver pub and then have a drink afterwards.

Browns is lovely although not been there for a few years.

You must have a pint in one of the old pubs (there are lots).

If it's a nice day I thoroughly recommend taking a punt from Cherwell Boathouse. Nice restaurant there too. It's a short cab ride from the city centre, a bit too far to walk but worth the effort.

Punting is a piece of piss if you're vaguely mechanically minded. Definitely a great Oxford experience.
