Been looking into 2.9 caymans for a while now and test drove this car today. This is the first one I have tested so nothing to compare it to at the moment... Brakes didn't seem as strong as expect and gear box had a bit of play in it, is this Normal? No sign of a smoky start up tho. Any help would be much appreciated.

Not wishing to be unduly negative but when the brakes on mine started to feel less strong than I was used to, changing the front discs and pads made a huge difference. So could be that, although they're not as servoed as a lot of other cars (eg Audi) that I'd had before so worth trying another to compare.

My gear stick was a bit slack too, right up until the transmission cables snapped leaving me stuck in 3rd (quite common apparently). After having them replaced and the Porsche upgrade kit to stop it happening again the play is gone. Was £800 or so so not ideal (I don't have an OPC warranty). Although could just mean they need adjusting as that can cause slackness too!

Oh, forgot to mention, mine does give a puff of smoke on start up sometimes (especially if parked with the left higher than the right on a slope or vice versa) but doesn't consume any oil, so if you drive one that does it then not necessarily a cause for concern as long as it's just a puff on startup and nothing more.

Thanks for the advice, how many miles does your car have on it? After phoning around garages today the all said the same thing " only an issue on 60k miles plus cars". The one I test drove only has 30k on it.

Bought mine in December 2015 with 24K miles on the clock and it's now on 45K - trans cable snapped at 34K. It's also an 09 car. I'm generally unlucky with cars so was half expecting the trans cable to snap (since it was about the only "issue" my research on the Gen2 Cayman could find). Great car and certainly hasn't dampened my enthusiasm for it, although if I bought another one I'd pay to have the Porsche upgrade kit fitted to prevent it happening again as it was quite inconvenient and is a bit of a design flaw (one of the cables has to bend around at an angle which is why they always snap in the same spot according to the indie mine's serviced at, the upgrade kit changes the cable angle so it's straighter as per the 981) and I am unlucky as I say so take what I say with a pinch of salt. My only real surprise was needing a new clutch (and flywheel) at about 40K miles. I can only assume the previous owner wasn't too kind to it!

Cheers John good advice. Going to take my time finding the right one usually buy the first car I see. Been luck so far with cars but like they say no such thing as a cheap Porsche.
