Evening all,

Would like to lean on the collective wisdom. I have an E36 328i that I use for track days and sprints, and thus far I've only taxed and insured it when I need it, by adding it as a temporary car to my existing Admiral multicar policy. This is quite reasonable at £25 for a week, but now the evenings are long I'd like to have it insured permanently so I can take it for a drive after work or whenever else I fancy - but it'll never do serious miles.

It has no modifications a mainstream insurer would baulk at, but as I'm 24 and it's a relatively high-risk car, even an arbitary 2000 miles a year and 6 years' NCB sees a best quote of £380 from the comparison sites (that one was with Hastings). It's a very, very favourable postcode so that feels pretty high to me. I've already tried Admiral to add it to my multicar, despite having done that in the past for reasonable money they're now asking for a king's ransom this year.

Anyone have suggestions for a company that understands occasional use of a car that's worth sodall? Or is the above price as good as it gets?

Should do it and do track day cover, agreed value etc which I couldn't get with Admiral.
Ask for Stacey.

Thanks, have enquired with them and I'll update when I get a figure. Interesting blurb on their site. I don't even need track day insurance included, the car's worth less than most excesses so it's just not worth the trouble, it's only minimum legal requirement for road use that I'm after. It probably gets 10 weeks temporary cover a year at the moment, so anything near £250 is a winner (since I'd end up using it much more as a result).

Any other suggestions gratefully received!

You may be aware but your NCB can only be used on one car at a time.

Adrian Flux is usually worth a try with this sort of thing.

They (and other similar brokers) will often mirror your NCB.

I know Flux don't have the best reputation on here, but IME they do the specialist stuff quite well.

(Not that I've had to make a claim, fortunately.)

25.00 per week is very expensive. I had my MK2 GTI insured as a second car on a classic policy with LV. paid a little over 100.00 for the year, fully comp.

Try Footman James or other classic insurers. Won't need to use your NCB either.
My E36 M3 cost £220 a year... and I live in London!

I've tried Flux before and had laughable quotes, but since you mentioned it, I've given them another go - twenty minutes burnt on the phone for a quote of over £500. That's another few years before I consider talking to them again..

As you say, I'm relying on being able to mirror my NCB which most policies seem able to do.

Footman James' online thing rejected it without reason (perhaps the car type being on the blacklist), but I'll give them a ring to see what they say, if £220 is possible in London then it's worth persevering with them!

as stated above, you need a classic policy. second car. will be dirt cheap. you don't have any NVB on a classic policy, it is just a yearly premium and no NCB taken or given. I had my RS2, VR6 and MK2 GTi all on classic polices and never paid more than 150 a year to insure any of them. the MK2 GTi was actually more than the RS2 !

Been on the phone to Footman James, they're unable to quote on this car until I'm 25 (not like I've been driving 328s for four years or anything), but I got them to put it through with my date of birth pushed back a year, just out of interest.. £148.11 with £50 excess.

Aaaargh irked unreal. They can't do anything at all while I'm 24, but that's so cheap it's ridiculous. The goalposts seem to keep moving for my "generation" - driving other cars cover and classic policies used to be had at 21, then as I got near it became 23, now 25...

Another recommendation for Footman James.

I've got my Toyota MR2 turbo insured with them on a limited mileage classic policy (it's a weekend car) and it's just over £100, including occasional travel to and from work included. As has been said they mirrored my daily drivers 11years NCD.

Great on the phone but not so good online.

Interesting... you must have a very good postcode. I'm 25 and I probably couldn't insure anything for £150.

Indeed, the postcode is very good.

Trying http://www.skyinsurance.co.uk now. Why do all of these smaller companies need to put you on hold while they produce the quote? It conjures images of them dropping the phone, tearing off their crib sheet and running over to their big mechanical calculation machine to punch it all in hehe

ETA: Not worth the time with Sky, new record with a shade over £700.

Turns out Manning are also no good, with a quote over £600 now, and an estimate that it wouldn't get much under £400 once I was 25. It seems Footman James are the only option worth entertaining, but sadly not yet frown thanks for all your suggestions!

Footman James - what a load of bks, just wasted 10 minutes entering details for an e36 in the family - "sorry, unable to quote" - won't be bothering with that again.

Did you not ask them why?

I had exactly the same, as mentioned above. When I called they could explain that the reasons were firstly my age, and secondly that they wanted (bizarrely) more details about the security systems on the car. I told them that if they saw it, they'd stop worrying hehe
