HOG

As a user of a slightly undersize but legally spaced 6 digit plate, I do feel for the OP, particularly when you see some of the horrors on the cr4ppy plate thread. I'm assuming the plate is not silly small or mis-represented.

Bet it's got HOG in it!

Must've been a slow day, I do find police are quite lenient with bike plates unless they're matchbook-sized or you're riding like a plum.

I got pulled a few years ago for a slightly smaller plate but with no BS markings, like the OP I had to change it or face a £100 fine and the copper was pretty reasonable (he pulled about 6 of us for the same thing) I now use the original dinner plates!

Refer said copper to ACPO guidelines which say if it can be read at 20.5m, then no action. I know they're only guidelines, but they are persuasive.

An illegal plate is an illegal plate, you chose to run it, you took the risk.

And he'll refer you to the "Here's an on the spot fine now sod off and sort it" law.

If they're being decent and just asking you to fix it then there's no point getting smart.

I've been done for this before, had a 7x5 plate on my SV1000. Always knew it was a risk, but annoyingly, the one time I got pulled was 1/2 a mile from home as I was returning from a 1,000 mile 3 day trip to Scotland. He followed me all the way across town whilst I desperately kept the clutch in at all opportunities to reduce the sound of my very loud, baffle-less at the time cans. He didn't mention the cans at all, but I got a producer to take the bike to the MOT centre to confirm I had put the full size plate on and then take the paperwork to the police station. Have kept the legal plate on ever since.

Could you not have said you were a Syrian or Somalian refugee on a ride out, then you might have got away with it wink

Many thanks for varied ,humorous and serious replies, done a bit of research and it depends what area you in,as some are lot keener than others,if you passing through some places keep you head down, legal number plate on order, have to trim the edges off,but leave the BS Mark, funny how cars with private, scrunched up letters seem to be above the law, or I could be wrong, another one to debate over, thanks again.

I honestly don't think a policeman would pull over a bike for an illegal plate, but then turn a blind eye to a car with one.

Remove it altogether. The fine is lower and you'll dodge detection until you're pulled for it.

I had a small one on that was on the bike when I got it.
Got pulled by two coppers, one was fine the other one had small man syndrome and got his tape measure out to measure the letters, distance between the letters, distance from the letters to the edge of the plate.... one and on it went.
Its amazing that you can have two guys doing the same job and one is such a knob jockey that the other one just stands there shaking his head at him and looking at me like 'sorry mate'
Fined and back to big plates to alleviate the need for a tug at all

Another way of looking at it is that one was doing his job (as he found that you had an illegal plate and you now use a legal one) and one wasn't doing his job.
