Anyone done it?

Planning a special trip for Mrs Bristol - our first holiday as a couple was to Prague many years ago in the height of summer, and we always talked about how we'd love to see it in the snow one day.

I was planning a surprise trip, 3 or 4 nights next January.

Part of me loves the idea of cosy meals in steamy bars, after a day in the bracing weather, and part of me thinks you'd have to be crazy to willingly subject yourself to average temps of below zero!

Also can anyone recommend a nice hotel in the £100-125ish per night bracket? Is food and drink relatively cheap still in comparison to the UK? It was notably cheaper even in the properly touristy spots when we went but that was over ten years ago.

Myself and OH stayed in Prague in March this year, stayed in the Hotel Friday, was a nice big room with a hot tub, around 250 each for 3 nights inc flights, a friend of mine stayed in the Barceló a couple of years ago, which is closer to the square and he said it was a nice place.

Whilst it was cold, usually around 0-3/4C, it wasn't snowing, but we were more than warm enough walking up to the castle and observation tower, and it wasn't cold down the side streets. Anytime we were cold, we'd stop off in a bar/coffee shop and recharge.

We found it to be fairly cheap away from the main square, however, in bars around the square, prices are about 3x higher than non touristy areas. Still not that high though.

We went in early Feb a few years ago, I just had a thin North Face coat which earned me a few comments from restaurant staff. I'd probably recommend being a bit more sensible and taking scarf and gloves, etc because it is very cold. About 50 metres out of the hotel one evening my hair wet from the shower had frozen solid. Not sure I'd want to go back at any other time of year having done it then though.

We stayed here which was about EUR200 (£150?) at the time. Anyway, I can't recommend it enough, it's one of the best little hotels I've ever stayed in and the wife was over the moon with it. I'd spend the extra even if it means 3 nights rather than 4.

I'd recommend this cafe, breakfast here was good and if I could remember the names of any of the restaurants we ate in I'd recommend them too. Everywhere we went seemed to do great food at very reasonable prices with staff who bent over backwards to help us out.

I did it last January. You will definitely need a hat with ear flaps! The temperatures don't seem to do how cold it is justice...

Lovely city and dead easy to get around on public transport.

I think that the Wenceslas square christmas market is still open for the first week of Jan.

(not temperature related but it might be nice to see)

We went in January and it was certainly chilly but nothing a hat a decent jacket wouldn't sort.

We stayed in the hotel Savic right in the centre near to Charles Bridge and it was quiet enough with good staff and a decent sized room.

I found this when I visited a couple years ago.

I sat at one of the outdoor restaurants literally opposite the astronomical clock one evening, had a lovely burger mean with a side of fries and 2 pints. Came to about £12, I can't really complain at that!

My friend is over there at the moment and I couldn't believe we were last there in 2010! It was February (over Valentine's) and we stayed at the Archibald At the Charles Bridge.
