Really bright rear light flashing read and white ?

I was driving down the A14 at the weekend and I passed a lot of people doing a time trial ( if you were one of them)

A couple of them had a really, really bright rear light that flashed red 3 times then white once - it was visible from a huge distance away and really stood out in comparison to the others

Does anyone know what it might have been ? I'm not sure I want something quite that bright myself for where I ride but it would be handy to know what it was.
