I'm doing a tour of Germany in a few weeks time and I've just noticed that one of the places I'm staying is less than an hours drive from the Ring.
I wouldn't be taking the car on it but is it worth it just for a look around? Is there anything to do other than just get on the course?

surrounding area is very pleasant, with fast smooth undulating roads.
Museum is worth it, imo. Creepy feeling looking at Jim Clark's wax figure, in that of all the figures his seem to have real eyes looking directly at you.
Spectating is good for a short while.
Definitely a good atmosphere overall, but would probably bore a non-petrolhead.

As a petrol head, it is definitely 'One of those places' that everyone should see & experience before its gone.

I wouldn't take your specific car around there either (too much risk/too usual to find parts, if there is an incident), but I would blag a passenger ride in someone else's car.

It's worth it even just to feel the atmosphere - I got goosebumps just getting close to the place

Every man should visit the ring at least once.

Insert innuendo here.

The museum is worth a visit even if there's no track action. There's an amusement park there too but whether it's operational or not I don't know. It went rather badly bust.

If you want a REAL motorsport museum then forget it - the "Ringwerk" museum is more like a child´s activity centre. There are few exhibits, a couple of dubious film shows and a shop. The lifesiye driver manequins are really creepy. Last time I was there I spent half an hour before being bored.

The shops in the "Ring Boulevard" consist mainly of memorabilia (stickers, t-shirts, even a toaster which burns the track map on to your bread!) and empty showrooms. If you want to have a look at the modern track from the main grandstand you have to pay, even if there´s nothing going on. The information centre near the main entrance has lots of maps and information, plus ticket sales for things like the Ring Taxi.

There are a lot of places to go and look at the "proper" circuit, popular spots including Adenau bridge where the track passes over the main road and there is a car park, cafes, bars etc. Adenau is very pretty too so you can justify a visit if accompanied by SWMBO. The surrounding Eifel, with all its well-surfaced country roads, is beautiful.

Take a look at their website, it gives dates of everything going on plus a weather forecast and details of public track use (I know you said you´re not planning to).

It´s certainly a place to drink in the atmosphere but when there´s nothing going on it´s really just another empty racetrack.

Loads of good info, thank you.
I am travelling solo so no danger of the OH getting bored (or telling me off for how I'm driving smile ) so I'll probably have a good look around at all your suggestions.

Will you be doing a write up as you go along? Please do

Unless you are a veggie, have dinner in Pistenklause whilst you are there. Hot stone fillet is ace.

I've never been but have friends that have gone over there just to take in some of the surrounding roads and spectate. It seems that as an overall experience it's a worthwhile trip for a petrol head!

I intend on getting over there at some point just for the sake of visiting.

I wasn't going to bother this year as I thought it might be getting boring but seeing as you've made the effort to request it...smile

I'm sure they have some veggie options as it's largely Italian, it's best known for that steak. The place is worth a look too.

Great
I can assure you, not one person here will be bored of reading about a petrol head in a supercar!

Do you have any idea of the dates your planning on visiting?

A rather weird little Dickie Bird has asked me to help you out here, I don't have the time today but I'll send you an Email tomorrow.

I went recently, just as a spectator, and instantly fell in love with the area. Some great places to get close to the circuit and watch, and there is an endless supply of exotic machinery just buzzing around. Steak in pistenklause and pizza in pinnochios (adenau) are well worth it too!
