Some people would say exactly the same about a car. If it gives someone pleasure, and they can afford it, I don't see the issue.

Why not, if somebody is happy to pay it then more power to them. Hope they enjoy it.

I was in town on Saturday showing some family the sights -> had a quick look in Harrods and there was a watch for £449,000.

Now that is stupid.

But remember these are status symbols - they exist solely BECAUSE of their price. They are there for some rich git to say 'he's made it' to himself and those he wants to impress/shag.

I think things like this exist ad human needs and wants dont scale with wealth, with a couple of million quid you could have a nice house and every material thing you could ever really need or want to a level of quality that is as good as you can really buy, or realistically need to.

But, when you have multi millions, it isnt really good enough to have decent, expensive stuff, so there is a market for sprinkling, normal everyday items with jewels, rare metals and bits of animals to make it extra special, same with food and booze, you can get a £100 burger, it Wagyu beef with truffles and various other nonsense, then some gold leaf dumped on it, because metal is delicious ? no, its comparatively poor people trying to come up with something to get money of very wealthy ones.

I think those with inexhaustible money like to feel they can have things others cant have, not always because they enjoy them, just to show others that there is a point to being that rich but at the end of the day, you are still human, still can feel crap, still have to go for a poo, still get ill, still die, but the trouble is, I think a lot run out of ideas, its like having a cheat mode on life to open up all the achievements, but you end up doing everything and then run out of ideas, thats where drugs and sexual deviancy step in, or perhaps jewel encrusted dead animals for carrying your mobile phone and hankies.

I am glad stuff like that exists, I am glad the rich kids of instgram parade it as it makes me realise I have got pretty much everything I could ever want and sometimes, not being able to buy things straight away is healthy, I find most of the joy of a purchase is the research and the anticipation and I would be denied that if I was super rich.

The only thing I envy is not having to go to work, but even then, sometimes having to do boring st makes the other time more enjoyable, there is only so much hedonism and self gratification you can do.

Reminds me of the phones you can buy for GBP 15,000. Does everything every other mobile phone does, needs charging all the time, loses signal regularly but its got a white gold case. Must have weighed a ton, which is probably why was on the table when it got stolen.

"Luxury handbag company Hermès raises crocodiles on its own farm and to find one with albino skin is extraordinarily rare; auction house Christie's described the sale as buying 'fashion history.'"

Imagine working upon the Hermes crocodile farm, they must have been pissing themselves laughing when the albino crocodile was born. That thing must have been given constant skin treatments as it was groomed into a handbag.

What a bunch of old wk. rofl

I wouldn't criticise anyone who bought one , their money , their choice.

But in the same breath cannot understand why you would feel that the price is stupid .

It's good business for the manafacturer, the retailer and HMRC , and if it makes the purchaser happy even better.

Vertu,

http://www.selfridges.com/GB/en/cat/wonder-room/ac...

Seems to be old Nokias and Android phones in fancy cases, quite an achievement convincing people to part with ten grand plus for a phone that is actually worse than anything you can buy for £800 or less.

I like electronic gadgets. My wife likes handbags.

She saves for them, and with a bit of an extra budget managed to grab a 'relative' bargain in the US. It's more than I would pay, but it makes her happy.

Would I object to a $300,000 handbag? Well I would at the foreseeable future, If however money was plentiful, then why ever not.....

My wife likes handbags and will spend £300 on one, I am sure she would spend more if she had it, to a point, you get a lot of handbag for £300, lovely craftmanship, even I can see that but 300k, I cant imagine how much money anyone would have to have to spend that on a bag, I suppose, if they hold their value and can be sold on then it doesnt seem as mad, get bored of it and then perhaps donate it to charity.

It's just oneupmanship on a grand scale.

Some rich totty has to have it and be seen by other rich totty who will want something more expensive, outrageous, whatever.

Next year there will be a £350k bag and someone will buy it.

Same with super yachts. Constantly trying to build bigger and better to be the daddy at Monaco.

Suppose it keeps people employed building this tat though.

It's just weird bidding - I could get hold of the same bag within 48 hours for half that price, just like other could with strange car bidding.
