Excess has always been seen by many as wrong and by others as right. I have just today visited Castle Drogo, built by an extremely wealthy man between 1911 and 1931. It was the last Castle built in the UK and featured every luxury that could be thrown at a home in that era.
The cost to build was staggering but employed many people for years and still does. How many homes could have been built for others then?

People need to stretch for more, without that urge we would be still living in holes. No handbag has a value of 300k, but if we look at it in detail, it creates wealth that gets spread around, employing people making things others need or want.

We should never draw a line that says something must never be more than X, allow the shallow to be parted with their cash if that is what they want and can afford.

Comparing someone with £20k in the bank to someone with £2b in the bank, it costs £3 to them as an equivalent.

But, when you have multi millions, it isnt really good enough to have decent, expensive stuff, so there is a market for sprinkling, normal everyday items with jewels, rare metals and bits of animals to make it extra special,
Reminds me of the phones you can buy for GBP 15,000. Does everything every other mobile phone does, needs charging all the time, loses signal regularly but its got a white gold case. Must have weighed a ton, which is probably why was on the table when it got stolen.
Vertu,

Seems to be old Nokias and Android phones in fancy cases, quite an achievement convincing people to part with ten grand plus for a phone that is actually worse than anything you can buy for £800 or less.
Wow, you quite literally don't understand the concierge service Vertu offer hehe. That's pretty cute.

Condescending much? rolleyes

My boss was given one and it was sitting in a drawer within about 6 weeks. Hes now on an iphone.

Any good concierge service can match Vertu if that is all soneone is after. It doesnt need to come with a crap phone tarted up to cost thousands.

The video at the end of the article is horrific! I didn't watch it all, and I guess its a good thing they showed part of the reality of making these trinkets!

I am aware of it, I did read about it but its only included for a year and after that its like 3 grand, so the rest of the time you have a nicely made but out of date phone, surely anyone with plenty of money has a PA of their own anyway, do people use the "Concierge" service that much ?

And "That's pretty Cute", really ?

$300,000 for a handbag is a snip compared to these, $150,000,000+ and each could be done by a demented zoo monkey.

Quite atrocious that people can even consider buying them after seeing that.

Would I object to a $300,000 handbag? Well I would at the foreseeable future, If however money was plentiful, then why ever not.....
I suppose it would depend on what the attraction was. If she loved rare handbags and collected them for some odd reason, or they were an investment, then , I might think it was OK but if she wanted it just to show off to others I'd be concerned if married someone a bit shallow.

Can't say I think I could ever justify that. IN the same way even if I had 50m from the Euromillions, I am not sure I could justify a Zonda - even though I really, really would love one.......

If there werent rich idiots spending megabucks on tat, then there would be less tax going into the pot and us "little people" would have to cough up more to compensate.
So good luck to them! In fact, i look forward to some other savvy company bringing out a $500,000 handbag to out-do this one.

Some people would say exactly the same about a car. If it gives someone pleasure, and they can afford it, I don't see the issue.
Ideally, purchased on credit thumbup

I can see where the money goes a bit more with a quality car, at that price its say a McLaren, Ferrari or Lamborghini, I am sure I couldnt knock up a leather bag (seem my wife make them) and it wouldnt be very good it would be better than if I decided to build a car, it would at least work as a bag.

A Mclaren requires millions, if not billions in R and D by some of the smartest engineers in the world, am sure there is some knowhow in a $300k bag, but not really any more than one at a grand, but an amazing place to have your bunsienss, making stuff that some will pay any amount of money for due to the name and limited numbers, especially for an item that fulfils, functionally the same criteria as what Sainsburys sell for 5p !

I'd hope she would. Why buy something just to show off and make other people (your friends) jealous. Who want friends that buy stuff just to try and make them or other feel bad? There's something about lacking and empty in people like that.

That makes no sense at all. There's a variety of reasons someone might want stuff beyond basic needs that isn't stupid and a variety of reasons that are stupid.
