What's the general PH concsensus on silk scarves?

My wife got me a rather dandy Hermes one for Christmas and I have to say I adore it, it's similar to the one in the picture, grey and a kind of steely blue. Looks great with a grey overcoat. smile
Depends on how you wear it. Are you wearing it like a cravat or a 'normal' scarf? It may look good, it may look try hard, depends on your persona (and the rest of your outfit).
Following the link provided, and having a closer look at the photo presented here, That is showing a scarf under a coat, rather than under a shirt or jacket.

For my own part, I think a silk scarf can look quite stylish, and really suits some men/outfits.
Though I tend to stick with wool/cashmere depending on occasion/weather/coat.
I do have a white silk scarf for formal evening wear.
+1 for the wool scarves. Next winter perhaps I'll treat myself to a Johnstons of Elgin cashmere.

I'm already 'dandy' enough with a pocket square, let alone a silk scarf. biggrin

Speaking of pocket squares, nabbed a proper handmade in Ireland white linen square from eBay for less then three pounds. smile

That is likely to work out quite expensive in the long run. hehe You will want nothing but handmade from now on.

Can someone please explain why you'd want a piece of rag sticking out of your top pocket?

A rag? You wouldn't. A pocket square, on the other hand, adds a bit of visual interest and breaks up an otherwise plain and uninteresting uniform look that is a suit.

It's a 'signal' for other men.

I must admit to not getting the pocket square thing at all. Being in my 40s the kerchief is more synonymous as a tool for head waiters to differentiate themselves from their junior staff, being a New Romantic, for homosexuals to communicate via and to facilitate spontaneous outbursts of morris dancing. In the evening it just looks like someone hasn't had time to get changed from their work as a shop assistant.

The resurgence in a desire to wear good clothes and to dress smartly is a great thing but it is interesting seeing how some of the old items are brought back into service such as Richard the II's snot rag. For me, it doesn't work and when someone walks towards me with a pocket square I by default think they are coming to take a drinks order or to ask me to leave the premisis.

That happens with some frequency does it?
Not that surprising I suppose, given your earlier clothing purchase disclosures biggrin

As for Mugabe, he's committed the ultimate error in his tie/square selection.
What a noob.

But you can rest peaceful in the knowledge that his fashion consultant is dead. smile
