The grain elevators are made tornado proof, I guess that they are slip formed concrete or some such. I doubt bricks would offer much more resistance than wood and be much more expensive to build in the first place.

I think the real point is, is when does it go from just being 'sensible' to prepping. Having an jacket/dry clothes in the boot of your car in winter, that's sensible, some oil? sensible, spare tyre? sensible, a tool belt, sensible if you know how to use it. When does the line blur? a tow strap, some non-perishable snacks, jumper leads?

Same when it comes to stuff in the house, having a couple of 20L tubs of drinking water in a cupboard is sensible, sometimes a towns plumbing goes tits up and it saves you the mad rush to the shops with everyone else when it happens. I make a point of having a week or so worth of non-perishable 'meals' sitting in a cupboard (mainly tinned beans and dry rice), just on the off chance I need them.

For me its more about the principle, stocking up for peak oil or the zombie apocalypse is a little nuts, but having basic supplies on hand to cope with say, breaking down in a rural area with no phone signal. Or dealing with a particularly bad winter storm or minor interuptions to water/electricity supply to me is sensible and something that most people should do.

inb4 someone calls me a loon for taking the slightest piece of responsibility for ensuring my own existence.

Of course, Grapes Of Wrath, it's a classic high school English literature book here in the U.S. It's also a soon to be reality for many people here.
What with the great orange leader making the country great again?
Presumably he was thinking of the bit when the tramp was suckling on Rosasharn. Whatever floats your boat I suppose.

Its all relative.
Having tampons in case its rag week, even though its not due? Sensible.
Having bulk tampons in case of gunshot wound / having to go full ray meats to start a fire? Bit special.
Having a few bits of filth saved on your PC? Common having 1 terrabite of grot in a Faraday cage? Eyebrow raising.

Unless we're stupid, we prepare for foreseeable needs every day. This is normal and a good thing. On the other hand, inventing nd then worrying about doomsday scenarios where you have to garotte your next door neighbour over drinking water is just batahit mental.

I think it's to do with the cost versus the benefit. As far as I know a big tornado will still flatten/terminally damage anything short of a bunker, so it makes more sense to build something cheaper as well as nicer to live in, then rebuild it if you're unlucky enough for it to be destroyed.

I can't imagine a tornado proof/resistant house would be cheap or nice to look at and live in.

Haven't most on this thread agreed that being prepared for things like a tornado is just being prudent (if you live in a high risk area) whereas being prepared for things like the breakdown of society just a little bit odd due to the fact it's really unlikely it'll happen anytime soon?
With that defeatist attitude to liberal caused weather issues I have to say that you don't sound like a man that can defend his family.

You should mount a .50 on the roof of your house and then you can shoot the weather as it approaches.

You've definitely analysed this thread incorrectly though, through the lens of your socialist BBC media. Prudent? Being prudent is stockpiling 100 years of food and ammo and also planing how to kill your neighbours as they will become bad guys as soon as TSHTF in the asssult on our civil liberties planned by the government.

Let me leave you with a top tip:

Don’t Put All Your Preps In One Place – You never know when disaster will strike. Your entire food storage could be wiped out in the blink of an eye. Place some caches around the area where you live, keep a bug out bag in every vehicle, and if possible, keep some supplies at your bug out location. If your neighbours know the location of any of your bug out caches kill them immediately, ideally do this before the start of the emergency, preferably two to three years in advance.

Wrong - CNN propaganda and fake news.

Under Trump all Americans (not immigrants, proper Americans) will live in one of these:

Safe from Mexican rapists etc.

I'm going to move my big survival ball near to 50oooohMustang's survival ball. Maybe our balls will rub together, that would be nice.

I prefer to think of myself as mildly conservative (fiscally conservative / socially liberal). Pointing out feckwittery and stupidity isn't intolerance. Nobody is stopping you from stocking up on beans, franks, and Tampax. Knock yourself out. My own safety net involved in relying on friends and fAmily. Each to their own.

Btw you damn European society as some sort of failed liberal dystopia and yet it's YOU that feels the need to prepare for a breakdown in society and thinks that self reliance is going to be the best option? What does that say about you?
It says if you want something done right then you do it yourself.

Hey buddy, so our big old balls resting against each other's does appeal? I'll get the flaps on my monster truck looked at if they are putting you off.

I knew you and I would get on.

We have a lot in common;

Both emigrated to a new country.

Both have proudly worn the cavalry Stetson (I was six, I believe)

Both have had an obsession with firearms (mine sort of disappeared when I was twelve though, sorry)

Both have served our countries in uniform - I was a sixer, no idea re your rank so don't call me Sir just yet.

Both have a keen interest in prepping; here's a top tip for you:

Don’t Be The Only Prepper In Your Household – Your entire family needs to be on board. They don’t have to be as excited as you, but they do need to have the knowledge and know how. Make sure you incorporate them into your prepping as much as possible. If necessary scare your children from an early age with stories of impending armeggedon. Make The Walking Dead family viewing as soon as your children are able to watch TV. If your family complain about six month long bunker drills then remind them that there will be no schooling to miss in the near future anyway as TSWHHTF and their life expectancy is likely to be less than 30. God bless.

Family and Friends don't need to "prep". Unless you live in a natural disaster zone, there is no reason in a modern western country why anyone needs to prep to the levels you seem to have taken it too.

Recently some friends where having house renovations done, the lady was pregnant and was having a hard time putting up with all the dust and noise in the house. So what did they do? They didn't pick up their bug out bag and go to their bolt hole, they picked up the phone and asked if we could put them up for a few days while the worst of the work was completed.

They could have just as easily stayed in a hotel but we had the space and where happy to have them, it wasn't a burden, we didn't need to "prep" except for buying a bit more food from the supermarket which they took care of anyway. They thanked us by buying groceries and springing for a nice dinner even though we expected neither. If I was ever in a similar situation or faced with an extended power\water outage, I have several friends or family who would do the same. No fuss, no need for prepping or indeed stocking up on tampons. It's what friends\family are for, that is if you are a normal person who actually gets on with people rather than fantasising about skinning them over the last tin of baked beans. I don't have to spend thousands of hours and dollars preparing for some end of the world scenario whose likely-hood of happening is so minuscule, I'd rather just get on with living my real life.

Do preppers have friends? When the chips are down, don't they become rivals/competitors/antagonists who, if you don't shoot them first, would slit your throat for your last pack of Lilets.

So what you're saying is leach of your family and friends. Don't expect anyone to prepare for the worst, there will always be jobs, petrol, clean water, safety and phone signal. What could possibly go wrong.
