I think you have that backwards.
You get the high rate on the first bit and then it drops to 1.25%.

Amex says:
- Get 5% cashback on up to £2,500 of purchases in your first 3 months of Cardmembership.
- Earn 2.5% cashback on all purchases for one month every year if you spend more than £10,001 in your previous 12 months of Cardmembership.
- An ongoing 1.25% cashback on virtually every full pound you spend.
no it was a quite different deal to this.

started low, then gets higher. another change if I get over something like £7500.

but that latest deal is pretty good. especially if you are going to put a holiday on it or something large.

Credit cards are not very useful if there are no shops open. Plus in a reasonably populated area you don't think other people would be trying to buy "spare clothes, food, water, the basics" queues etc and that is if they have power to run the tills. Better to just have it prepared to grab and go.
When was the last time in the last 2000 years when there were "no shops open"?

ETA I was responding to 5oh's post about Hurricane katrina. I don't disagree that some cataclysmic event which results in the complete and total shutdown of "Society" could happen. However, IF something like that happens, it's better to be with a group of like-minded people working towards a solution than in a remote wilderness surrounded by a year's supply of dried pasta.

That's kind of the little elephant in the room. It ignores the fact that by far the most logical action is to just migrate to the next town/state with food and accommodation but then there is a reason why it does that and that is because the loons are planning for a total end of days scenario where the whole of the US shuts down and there is nowhere to escape but to a hole in the ground with a stash of tampons, a Faraday wk cage and an overwhelming desire to murder every human they believe to be inferior to themselves. These are extremists just like the others with pick-up trucks, indoctrination websites, right wing media, beards, guns and a belief that everyone else in society is wrong. Damaged goods. biggrin

Well I for one am glad 5o is back for 2 reasons.

1) If he is back posting on PH then it probably means the end of the world has been averted for now (phew)

2) It's a constant source of amusement to see a Northener, who are on the whole the most down to earth people you could meet, be so far out the other side. I asked a Northern mate what he'd do in the event of a disaster scenario and he said "go to the pub".

Well, it worked for Simon Pegg when faced with an actual total zombie apocalypse.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned CCTV yet. Surely you needs an OPs Centre, which entails fitting motion activated CCTV cameras around your property, and possibly inside it, just in case they get in and you have to fight room to room. It's all very well bugging out, but what if there is no time to so and you find yourself trapped in your house.

I watched "The Road" recently and I'm now thinking of building a cellar accessed from the understairs bog by a tunnel. That way the cannibals won't be able to figure out how to get at my stores.

You're absolutely right. A 4,000 litre rectangular one would do it. The Feds wouldn't suspect a bunker was there because all that would show up was me ordering a sh*t tank. I've could smear crap all over the inside of the understairs toilet like in Desperado to keep people out ( I'm not sure if they wife will be too happy but I'll explain it's incase of a collapse of the Western Social Order ). The inspection hatch on the sh*t tank is perfect too for surveillance.

Btw I've written to Ersnt & Gallo about our little business proposal but have yet to hear back from them. I just hope they aren't going to steal the idea, perhaps seeing a patent lawyer first would have been a good idea?

You need to have an emergency exit coming out in the woods, usually via a disused mine, a few hundred metres away, and the whole place rigged with explosives. Can't be too careful when it comes to dealing with intruders.

Regardless of the perceived insanity of preppers (each to their own) I do enjoy watching some of those videos because I am a gadget geek.

Spades with edges, knives, GPS trackers, all sorts of paracords and water purification tablets, fishing lines in altoids tins, 8-hour fires, MRE bags. AMAZING!
I think you are right, a big part of it does seem to be surrounding looking at buying and reviewing new kit. As lot of the Youtube channels get stuff sent direct from the factory for free to review.

Just pay it off each month, you epic muppet.
Why use it if you already have the money genius? Oh you're one of those. Good luck.
50h

this is not a dig at you, it's a genuine thing.
You should really look into the benefits of using a credit card.

it offers a level of protection that is really easy to claim on. Should you buy a holiday and the company goes bust, you can claim back on the credit card. Or if an item was broken, or never arrived in the post.

You can also get rewards for spending money through them.
I get 2.5% cashback on everything I spend, and have setup a direct debit to pay off the balance each month straight after payday, so I don't notice using it.

it also gives me another card to pay with should my first one not work for some reason (updates to the bank's system etc)
Where do you get 2.5% cashback!!?

/also "one of those" apparently!

I like using my credit card and pay it off each month.
- Purchase protection.
- Allows me to buy things on this crazy invention called the internet - often cheaper than building those things myself or travelling to China to pay someone to do it for me in cash.
- Cashback - BUT NOT 2.5% dammit!
- Audit trail. Can see how much I have blown on Amazon this month/eating out/petrol etc...
- Quicker than cash with contactless.
- Smaller than a fat wad in my pocket, ruining the line of my expensive Gap chinos. wink
Or leave a chunk of debt on it and bounce it between 0% transfer cards and companies will be falling over themselves to offer you loans.

I assume at which point you spend them on bog rolls and .22 air rifle pellets and go live in the lake district

I think of 50ohmastung as being in a similar vein to chemical chaos. I can't believe they are not playing to the gallery.

You can't have so many people laugh at your posts and ridicule your opinions that much and not be aware of why.

Do I really believe he is an ex-northerner turned USA super army soldier now operating in some function where he has to delete his posts for OpSec reasons....and that he has moved his family to a more dangerous country to be safer?

Do we think he really lives in the wilds, carry firearms everywhere he goes and is set up to bug out at a moments notice already having thought about how he will kill his neighbours should TSHTF?

No, not really. I think he's having a bit of a laugh with us, playing up to it etc.

Long may it continue!

The thing is I'm not so sure it is a joke. Oh he certainly seems to be playing to the crowd a bit but I suspect 90% of it is true. I met a prepper in real life once and they sounded exactly like 5o. He has either done an incredible amount of research which seems like a lot of effort just to troll some people on a car forum or he is the real deal (in terms of being a hardcore prepper, not the Opsec stuff, that is pure BS or he really is a few short of six pack)
