Really? You think they would swindle the vote in such a fashion?

I believe that's always the case - there was a link to some chap talking about electronic voting on youtube where I think he goes over why...

Here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3_0x6oaDmI

(I haven't watched it again as my overriding desire when I watched it the first time was to push the fella in the Thames...but he makes some interesting points).

Maybe take your own pen in your tinfoil hat

I've never been in a polling station where it wasn't a pencil being used.

But you've always been allowed to use a black pen - the vote counting equipment may not pick up blue.

Just don't take anything that can smudge as a second mark will confuse the kit and invalidate your vote.

Already been asked on one of the multiple threads on the referendum. This is the explanation I heard on Radio 4 yesterday when someone asked about pencils in polling booths -

It's to do with past examples of pen ink fading before the vote was counted or before a recount.

Also, you can, if you want to, use your own pencil (but not your own pen).

You can't go wrong with a pencil - ask a Cosmonaut it a test pilot.

The procedure for collating and storing postal votes is different than direct votes. They don't end up in a box and being carted around the place risking smudging, getting wet etc - so maybe that's why they state pens in those circumstances.

Cheaper to leave ink on the ballot paper than a pen.

Good God the "ooh put your tin foil hat on missus" crowd really pisses me off. How naive do you have to be to imagine anyone in government isn't capable and willing to do anything underhand as a means to an end.

Encouraging the use of pencils because pen ink might fade? Are they going to count the papers this century? You have to be fking kidding me!

Except they went to pens/wax for fear of the dust pencils created getting in electronics and air circulation systems... But that's semantics :P

Pencils are fine, they wont change votes, if they wanted to fix it they would just add the votes they don't want to the spoiled pile.

I believe there are a lot of specially trained EU immigrants employed at the Polling Stations with pencil sharpeners to leap into action the moment the point is below the EU mandated pointiness angle.
