Which is stupid as I volunteered for everything I could when I served and did some brilliant and unusual stuff.

I have just started volunteering at a local hospice for children with life limiting conditions.

They are my company's nominated charity and their name is on my hill climb car - seems a good next step.

I haven't started yet and I am not totally sure I will be emotionally up to it. But I'll have a go!

I'm starting off doing gardening and maintenance for a couple of hours on a Saturday morning, and I will see if I feel up to befriending, I'm sure I will get on ok
Your braver than me I volunteered at a local hospice, and was invited to volunteer at the children hospice and I couldn't reconcile that one in my head so stuck to the adults, where I filmed video diaries and messages for sufferers children at various point of their life.

I have to say I have never cried as much as I did when I was there but was also fortunate to meet truly some amazing people, even now years later some of those people made such an impact whenever I feel like moaning about some unimportant carp like the gas bill it puts everything into perspective.

I'm heavily involved in a motorcycle-based organisation which started in USA and we've recently brought to the UK which empowers victims of child abuse. It takes a lot of time and effort but is very rewarding.

Blood Biker here. We do have drivers who use their cars, but the rules have just changed that they now also need an advanced driving qualifications. We have controllers and also lots of help with fundraising
That's interesting... Do they ever use 'ambulance' statutory exemptions?

We try and do a bit through our company, we occasionally offer ongoing maintenance and safety inspections f.o.c. in return for being able to have a "proud to support xyz" on our website

Not much but every little helps

Well, we'll see.

Have to say the odd tear in induction. Silly things like seeing a girl who had brought her Peppa Pig blanket from home made me feel a bit teary - it was an oddly effective way of hitting home that these poor little kids are just that - little kids.

We only have Blues on our marked bikes. Different groups around the country have different rules, but at the moment we are not allowed to exceed the speed limit, just aid progress. Some groups dictate lights off at red lights. There has been discussions around the whole blue light thing with all agencies, a consultation is in progress to allow blood bikes and some other agencies speed limit exemptions. But that would mean more expense on specialist training, which is an additional cost and on insurance. So not sure where that will go if passed.

A lot of groups now come under the National Association of Blood Bikes (NABB), so the rules are being aligned between member groups. That is where the advanced qual for car drivers and 3 yearly check ride for all members come from. IAM don't currently have to re-take the test, but will have to be checked by an approved person. ROSPA holders have a 3 yearly re-test.

Interesting. I hadn't considered the aiding progress angle, no legal issues but might be some interesting liability issues in the case of a vicinity accident.

I did some volunteering last year. Left the forces and had a 12 month career break so i did some work for the local age concern branch. I went out one a week for their helping hands project doing DIY type jobs, fitting grab rails, key safes PIR's etc. They emailed me jobs through and off i went in my van with a toolbox and ladders.
Frustrating? very! But rewarding. They weren't very well organised and had limited resources but at least i managed to do something to help the old folks out.

It's the silly things that make it so human. I had radiotherapy for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma when I was 24, so 10 years ago now. I can still remember very vividly being sat in the waiting room for one of the 30 or so sessions when some parents came through pushing their kid in a wheelchair, who I think it safe to say had leukaemia. The kid was probably under 10, but it was hard to tell for much the same reason as I'm referring to a 'kid'; without hair and looking that unwell, telling age / gender was a non-starter. It didn't bother me at the time, possibly because I was looking forward to being felt up by nurses as they aligned me on the radiotherapy table. But...

I've thought back to that moment countless times since. Safe to say if I were to become an actor and needed something to create tears on demand, dwelling on that memory would be a good start. It's also changed my outlook on life completely. Yeah sure, there are some bits and bobs in my life that are far from ideal, but what that family must have been going through I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. Not even Michael Gove.

Rally Marshal/Official. We're getting very short of 'new blood' coming into the sport which with the new safety requirements could affect events.
I do some Marshalling too (when work doesnt get in the way)
I dont count my self as new blood though as I am mid 40s lol

Are you yorkshire based? I am sure I have heard that call sign before.

How are you finding it? I did it briefly (3 terms) as a non-parent and found it to be appalling. Parent governor interests went against the guidelines and they were only interested in decisions / investments that helped their children's interests (i.e. a 1-2 year timeframe) and were not interested in long term planning, despite the wishes of the Head. I resigned in the end.

Don't be that governor. wink
I won't be that governor, Its for all the school that my heart lies, but the performance of the school and good that they teach benefits the local community too.

Forgot I'd done some classic rally marshalling ( Yorkshire ) based.

When I get the time ( 5 year old gets in the way!) I'll return to the circuit.

I do volunteering.

Once per week I teach a local Codeclub ( https://www.codeclub.org.uk/ ) based in the library.

Currently do two groups at the same time, one learning scratch, the other python.
Its really satisfying seeing them progress week by week.

It would be nice to get support from the library staff as divvying up my time to help 8-10 kids is difficult, and they endlessly forget the book the computers for me... even though they asked me to do the volunteering in the first place!
