I did Princes Trust for about 4 years, very rewarding - I learned a lot and hopefully helped a few people.

I'm now an unpaid trustee of a large charity which is sort of volunteering (it's all in my own time) and I chose a charity over a for profit company. Again, I learn a lot and they find my advice useful.

Which is very helpful; depends what questions you can ask to help someone decide that suicide is the wrong choice.
Yes that is true. But if they were actually going to kill themselves on the phone you can't call them an ambulance or advise them to call.

I did give it a lot of thought as I agree that just talking to someone does help but I couldn't sit there knowing someone is on the other end of the phone bleeding to death and I can't go out and save their life
Wow. Didn't think they'd be quite at that point when calling you.

Huge vote for the PT. I was on the PT back in 2002 and loved it. One of the best 3 months of my life. Even fell in love with my first proper GF through it. The leaders were fantastic and really helped us. I would encourage my kids when they are old enough to do it.

Mine is a bit seasonal, but I am Father Christmas. I do it at a local kiddies Farm (they pay me) and I also do The Great Ormond Street Christmas Parties. I have a Justgiving page every year, and I do School Fairs and nurseries and things like that. I also do home visits, kids minds are blown when Father Christmas knocks on the door!! I ask people to donate to GOSH for my services.

That soothes my conscience for the rest of the year!

Teach English to a lovely Pakistani couple who are seeking asylum here. Visit them for an hour a week to give a lesson. Never taught before - but it's one of the most satisfying things I've ever done.

Also help run a pay-as-you-feel community cafe - two mornings a week.

I do a bit for our lads Cadet group, taking photos mainly but done a bit of fundraising & gone away as additional adult for weekend away before now.

My OH does 2 evenings a week for them, paperwork etc & she really enjoys it.

I also take photos for our Daughters kayak club, mainly when they are racing, it's not much but it's appreciated by the members so we all get something out of it.

We had our dog PAT tested years ago & he passed with flying colours but my OH couldn't get the hours to work & we weren't keen on paying to volunteer!

How much of an influence do you have? What have you done that has genuinely improved education standards of the pupils?

Every year I go out on cold wet evenings in February and March picking up buckets of frogs, toads and newts from housing estates built on their habitats and move them to breeding ponds.

I'm a Run England Run Leader. I help get people into running as a form of fitness. I do 2-4 hours leading a week but spend many hours outside of that fielding questions from folk looking for advice etc.

It's a great way to get out and do some keep-fit while getting to meet some generally nice people. Some of the guys I've had at my sessions have gone on to become pretty decent club racers, almost everyone gets a reasonable level of benefit from it though.

I helped set up and now run direct or otherwise volunteer at our local junior parkrun for 4-14 year olds. Not quite in the league of some of the other volunteer roles mentioned but worthwhile nonetheless.

If you want to be involved with the appeal go to the RBL website and they inturn will introduce you to someone like myself.

I did 2.5 years as a special constable.

Each force differs, but for the most part, I was working with response teams going to 999 and 101 calls. Anything from sudden deaths to violent domestics, RTCs and traffic operations to armed robberies. It's very rewarding and very frustrating, as you get to work on the very front line with people who are in urgent need of help, and you get to see how difficult it is to get that help to them!
