A pistonheads request - What is the best desert 4x4 experience in Dubai? I'm going in a few weeks and seen a few mixed reviews. Is there any people can recommend?

Do you want a trip or do you want to drive.

Drive options are
side by sides
quads
bikes
4x4

Some companies will rent you a 4x4 to go and play by your self
quads/side by side/bike tend to be a 1-2 hour experience
Also you can do a 1 day desert driving course

As its hitting 50Deg C today doubt you really want to spend that much time in the desert.

I've been to Dubai 7 times and always done the 4x4 in the desert.

I love going but there aren't that many tours so the Desert safari is a fallback.

Lots of companies running them and I've always just booked through the hotel concierge, about £50 a person.

I'm going again in September and as well as the $x4 there are tours including a quad bike blast so i'll go for that as well as including the Bedouin feast.

One tip i'd advise is to go in the afternoon as the sunset is impressive.

PS. It's hot, another level hot. When you get out of the car in the desert it's like opening the door of an oven !

We did a desert experience last year, I forget the company but it consisted of;

- Leave after lunchtime with a 2-3 hours in the dunes and watched the sunset

- Stayed at an overnight camp, slept out under the stars. Brilliant.

- Next day drove into Oman to swim in a waddi which actually wasn't worth it.

A great experience for the us and the kids.

I was thinking 4x4 but quads or side by sides sound good too. I am not too fussed about meals just a good experience.

I probably shouldn't hire a 4x4 as I have driven off road once in a wood in Kent.

Thank you for the suggestions. Any recommendations would be great.

Neil Hopkinson from Porsche driving experience centre and jonathan palmer race tuition. A thoroughly lovely guy and a skilled driver.

Every trip follows Neil's unique approach to off-roading. The emphasis is on adventure and as such participants are encouraged to develop their own off-roading skills.

Using a rally-style road book and maps each vehicle makes its own way to the next camp, auberge or hotel. Impala vehicles lead the way and sweep behind to ensure there are no problems on the route and to assist any vehicles if required.

There are many advantages for not traveling in a convoy, you can explore the route at your own pace, stopping at locations that you choose and experiencing new cultures and landscapes as if you were there on your own, secure in the knowledge that the Impala support teams are there in the background should they be needed. Respect for and interest in other countries and their lifestyles is a significant aspect of an Impala adventure.

The result is an adventure where off-roading is used as a means to access remote and exciting places and to take part in a truly enriching experience.

Off-road driving is only part of the Impala experience. Neil is also one of Porsches Driving Consultants, Jonathan Palmers (of F1 fame) Senior Instructors as well as a qualified RosPa driver and offers tuition on road, race and off road driving techniques.
