I'm a bit dissapointed with posters on this thread. There's been numerous posts saying that Christians must be a bit gullible and stupid to believe in Jesus as the Son of God without a shred of evidence
They've used science and historical records to discredit the Bible and assumed Christianity must be something you've been brain washed into by your parents. I made a joking reference to being ridiculed and persecuted at the start of this thread and the ridiculing bit's certainly come true smile
Despite all this, after 26+ pages no ones thought to ask "Why do you believe?"
Personally I wasn't born into a Christian family, I didn't go to a Church school. I don't think I'm stupid (I went to University and then ran my own business for several years). I then developed an illness that has put me in a wheelchair and despite all this I like to think I'm a Christian.
But no ones bothered to ask why, either to me or to any other of the Christians who've posted. I guess it's part of the human psyche to always believe they're right?
Anyway, I'm off on my jollies now so I can't answer if anyone was to ask smile

Very interesting post.

I've just read the last few pages and it does rather seem to be non-believers trying to convince them by using evidence to disprove something that is entirely reliant on faith.

All religion seems like a load of bunkum to me and I'm happy enough to have the debate for entertainment purposes but it does seem rather obvious that there's something that has always drawn mankind towards believing in a higher power.

Science, communication and understanding may eventually make religion a niche idea round the globe but until it does, once it's in someones head it's pretty much impossible to dispel it with logic.

Not sure on the car, but this is what would be under the bonnet.

I havent asked why because frankly i dont care why. There are people who believe in the tooth fairy and i dont care why they do either.

The beef i have with religion is the impact it has on us regular people and how its forced upon children at school.

What does bemuse me is that followers of all religions believe they are following the One True Religion and consider other religions wholly wrong and ridiculous, yet their version is to them totally believable.

And to quote someone else. Given there are around 1,000 active religions in the world today, i dont think my view is that far removed from those who follow one religion or another on here. After all, of those 1,000 religions, i simply believe in one less than you do. wink

Yes. The fear of ones own mortality.

Religion takes that fear away by promising a better afterlife.

It answers mans question that there has to be something more to life.

Also - less and less so now - it fills the gap in knowledge. Thunderstorms, rainbows, floods - all originally attributed to God, but now understood via science.

Could you imagine how primitive we as humanity would look if some advanced alien race turned up on earth and we'd all these supposedly great religious leaders trying to convince this higher life form of how their invisible friend in the sky was the One True God and then trying to tell these aliens that their entire history was godless and trying to convert them?

It would be cringeworthy to say the least.

How do you explain the resurrection and the Jewish historian Josephus not disputing it?
Flavian Josephus, the turncoat Jew who allied himself to the Roman Flavian rulers at the battle of Judea which the Jews lost? Who then helped the Romans create a retro-fitted New Testament to bring the Jew's beliefs more in line with the Roman way? You mean that Josephus?

I'm probably like a lot of people
I've no interest in it but we seem to turn towards it in crisis (weddings and funerals).
It's not for me. But it doesn't bother me that other are.
If that's your thing. Good luck to,you and I hope it brings you happiness and peace

Your last words highlight the problem of religion.

Faith and belief are all in the mind, yet they are not adverse to carrying out physical acts that impinge on others. Extremists of religion (Christian, Islam et al) are not adverse to killing in the name of their god. Atheists aren't flying planes into buildings or shooting abortion doctors to try and prove their point. They don't have to; the evidence and theories to support how we came about is enough.

I don't think atheists (myself included) are on here trying to covert anyone; it's nigh on impossible when common sense and evidence are ignored or denied. The burden on proof is on the believers to prove a positive, not on us to prove a negative. We're not the ones claiming something as yet unseen or proven exists.

The invisible and non-existant look remarkably similar.

Not sure how you make that out? Not sure there is any scientific view on original sin. Immaculate conception means being born without original sin.
