not so much as hidden away in a drawer, but this is an amazing bit of engineering sitting on a shelf in my office...

Curta calculator by jon bawden, on Flickr

it's a mechanical work of art, and the story of how it was developed is pretty amazing too..

That is really nice! Just went looking on ebay... between 800 and 1200. I don't want it as an ornament that much! Beautiful thing though.

For my contribution, I was going through my old stuff that I had as a kid... found this (not my pic):

I loved that thing. Box is a lot more dog-eared though.

I mean a machine that runs an up to date version of OS X in the case of my old G5...Whatever that's called, haha!

You can't run an up to date version of OS X in it without ripping out the innards and basically just starting again with a re-purposed case so I thought Hackintosh seemed very apt but I'm not techy at all and find the level of pedantry that computer people seemingly require before they can help you to be soul-suckingly awful, so will probably get no further than being frustrated about not even knowing what to call the fking thing!
Haha, no worries.

check this out:

http://www.thelaserhive.com/product/matx-original-...

Its a ready-made conversion kit, probably requires some basic spannering, but all the hard work (dimensions, port cutting etc.. has all been done), past that it is a matter of picking out hackintosh compatible parts and installing OSX, should be doable for anyone who has built their own PC before (with some online help)

Not exactly in a drawer, but within my office and very near to a drawer wink

That brings back some memories.
In my teens I was chucked off one by an arcade manager after "playing for too long" - my 10p had lasted three hours so far and my score was over 3 million, with 104 ships and 94 smart bombs remaining to use - to say I was annoyed is an understatement.
The world record at the time was 10 million points !
You are me!!

My highscore was 3.5 million and I got banned from my local arcade, as I was on it too long and the machine only made 10p in one day! biggrin

Mega geek points for having a marquee signed by Eugene Jarvis! clap
Blimey, that was the daddy of all machines for me in my youth. I'd never trouble the high scores but I loved that game.

Reminds me of my old Ux1xn

I had to sell it when my main Laptop broke, it was hard to justify keeping it - Wish I hadn't sold it though, it's still the coolest bit of kit I've ever owned

Hmm...interesting! That certainly doesn't sound beyond the realms of my ineptitude...

Cheers for the link!

Very nice peice of kit indeed!

I try to hang on to my devices like this, only so I can amaze the grankids later in life at how huge all of our old tech was back when we were lads! smile

I used to have a beautiful Nokia 8800, I sold it on ebay a few years back, but I regret it, I've been meaning to buy another one but they still fetch quite strong money for something I'd never *actually* use

(pic from my eBay listing)

Does anyone else really miss mobile phones from about 10 years ago?

I mean, I love the functionality of modern smartphones, but my last 4/5 phones have just been variations of the same black screen.

We used to have beautiful things that flipped, slid and twisted. Better days hehe

I really regret selling them all now, would love to still have them all for the sake of the few pence I probably got for them

Yes! I too miss them - longer battery life, more simplicity- I have often thought of getting something like the 8800 on payg and having a tablet with a data card instead... but that seems silly, then when texting... yuck!

yes

I've considered this too, then it just becomes a ballache of carrying around 2 devices.

The build quality of those 8800s was excellent, there was something very satisfying about the sliding mechanism

For some reason I want a Nokia 6310 to go in the phone cradle in my e39 but they fetch annoyingly strong money on eBay :-(

Still using an 8800 for my company phone. No need for anything other than calls. Fantastic bit of kit and certainly looks the part. Funny that at the time it came with two batteries as the lifetime was inferior to other products - but it gets used loads and outlasts my iphone by a factor of days...

Forgot all about this little puppy, still as new in its box in the loft!

It's complete with all the original box, manuals, CDs , power supply, car charger, modem, pcmcia cards, leather Filofax case, desktop dock everything.

The original invoice says I paid £380 for it back in 1999, again must be equivalent to about £1500 these days!
