In response to the "Council" thread which now seems to include so much that this will probably die on it's feet.
"Things which are not Council at all"
My first suggestion :
Driving a Volvo V70 pre 2004
Funnily, upon reading the thread title, I did think "driving an old Volvo"."Things which are not Council at all"

Dressing properly to go out, even for a short trip.
Eating properly and going to proper establishments rather than fast food places (though admittedly I did stop off for a Burger King on a long journey home yesterday, sue me).
Properly maintained houses and gardens.
Actually taking pride in the appearance of yourself and your possessions.
Not putting watching TV endlessly above every other priority in life.

It would appear that we are not council - can't wait to tell her the good news!
(To further my non-council credentials: we also have a driveway, the house has a number rather than a name and is full of nice old books - icing on the cake is that we still have a CRT television).
Just had a thought though - is being proud of not being council, a bit council in itself? This would make you a bit council even though, on the surface, you wouldn't appear to be council. Being not council therefore can = council.
This may be how council black holes are formed (or Blackpool, as I like to call it).

No that's middle class. The middle classes are acutely aware of needing to differentiate themselves from working class / council. The genuine upper classes are often lovely people beacuse they are so secure in their position they really don't give a crap about proving it, and don't need to look down their noses at other people as a way of affirming that they are 'above' them.Timmy40 said:

I like to think that only people who are members of a chartered professional institute are really middle class. People who aren't but still say they're middle class are just pretentious.
I'm not a member of a professional chartered institute.
